Wire we scared?

I had a client once that always said,"If you're scared, say you're scared!" Ok, we are scared in Atlanta. Everything is closed today because of inclement weather. This means the roads are wet. But, it has been snowing and the worst is yet to come. Some parts of the area are expecting upwards of an inch of ice accumulation.

Ice is really heavy. If you had a block of ice 12 inches by 12 inches by 1 inch, it would weigh 6 pounds. So why should we care? Well, this ice we are expecting tonight and tomorrow will freeze on trees and power lines. Trees with this much weight tend to fall, taking down power lines. The ice on the lines by itself may be a problem

The power lines you see along the road are rated to carry a maximum load of no more than 1/4 inch of ice. We are expecting 4 times that amount. The carnage could be catastrophic if lines throughout the middle of Georgia come down in the next 24 hours. Crews are already staged and awaiting their signal to head out to trouble areas. My fingers are crossed.

I remember one ice storm when I was a kid in Buffalo and those are not to be downplayed.  I wish you all the best in Atlanta, you have had a rough few weeks of weather.

Peter - Best of luck to you... there is nothing worse than being without power in freezing temperatures.  Make sure that your emergency kit is together and that you have enough flashlights and batteries.

Peter, sending prayers your way for you and your family to be safe.  Last Wednesday's storm in South Central and East Pennsylvania left 850,000 without power, many for several days, and today, nearly a week later, 21,000 are still in the cold.  PA residents are used to bad Winter weather, but not the ice. Be as prepared as you can be, and hope that someone upstairs is watching over you.

Peter this really is a rough winter. Mother Nature is not taking mercy on anyone. We have snow stacked up ten feet in some places. A really strange winter all across the USA.
