Preventing Identity Theft & What To Do If It Happens

1. Do not sign the back of your credit cards. Instead, put 'PHOTO ID REQUIRED.'  Better yet have your photo on your credit cards.

2. When you are writing checks to pay on your credit card accounts, DO NOT put the complete account number on the 'For' line. Instead, just put the last four numbers. The credit card company knows the rest of the number, and anyone who might be handling your check as it passes through all the check processing channels won't have access to it.

3. Put your work phone # on your checks instead of your home phone. If you have a PO Box use that instead of your home address. If you do not have a PO Box, use your work address. Never have your SS# printed on your checks. (DUH!) You can add it if it is necessary. But if you have It printed, anyone can get it.

4. Place the contents of your wallet on photocopy machine. Do both sides of each license, credit card, etc. You will know what you had in your wallet and all of the account numbers and phone numbers to call and cancel. Keep the photocopy in a safe place.

5. We have been told we should cancel our credit cards immediately. But the key is having the toll free numbers and your card numbers handy so you know whom to call. Keep those where you can find them.

6. File a police report immediately in the jurisdiction where your credit cards, etc., were stolen. This proves to credit providers you were diligent, and this is a first step toward an investigation (if there ever is one).

But here's what is perhaps most important of all: (I never even thought to do this.)

7. Call the 3 national credit reporting organizations immediately to place a fraud alert on your name and also call the Social Security fraud line number.

These are the numbers you always need to contact about your wallet, if it has been stolen:

1.) Equifax: 1-800-525-6285

2.) Experian (formerly TRW): 1-888-397-3742

3.) Trans Union : 1-800-680 7289

4.) Social Security Administration (fraud line):  1-800-269-0271

Hello John ... some great information on preventing identity theft! Las Vegas is rated one of the top cities for this and I try to explain to people but they don't believe me.

I've had to deal with this and you covered all the angles.  The only thing I'd add is to go to common sites you use for ecommerce (Amazon, ebay, etc) and make sure nobody has logged in as you to buy stuff.

Actually there is a fairly neat iPhone application that can be used to keep your wallet contents available in backup on your phone.  The app is called "KeyRing" and I've now thrown out all the non-magnetized cards (reward programs, etc) as the application keeps a copy of the barcode and photos of front and back of all cards.

With the ability to quickly remotely kill the iPhone if it's lost (and with password protection enabled) it seems like a way to keep the information on me in the event the wallet is lost.

If I lost both the wallet and the phone at the same time - well it was a bad day anyway!

Great Post John!  My Mom was a victim of identity theft, so I do know the hassle of going through it.  You do need to take these precautions, as you might not get the help you would expect from the authorities or at least we didn't.

Great advice, John. I do the first three, but four through seven are ones I need to add. I do carry a photocopy of my passport when I travel to a foreign country.

Identity theft is no longer something that "happened to someone else".  I can't think of a single person I know who hasn't experienced it at least once.

John - I'll never understand why credit card companies still tell you to sign the back of your card. I've been writing " See I.D." on mine for years. The sad thing about this - only one in about ten people actually ask to see my I.D.! Good post.

I keep a little book at home with all my card numbers and the 1800 numbers for each card. Has saved me once when I lost my wallet. With online banking and all that it is becoming more and more common.
