Is Newspaper Advertising Worth It?

As I was preparing my 2008 business plan and budget, I continue to be amazed that I was considering "throwing out" all print advertising.  Some of the magazine ads that I have placed in the past have been fruitful (at best) but the newspaper has been a total disaster.

In the past year and a half, I have placed approximately 25 display ads and have received 0 calls.  That's a 0 as in zero.  Talk about a bad return on your marketing dollar.  My basic theory when trying to sell houses is exposure creates demand and demand creates value.  If the exposure is so minimal (newspapers), their cannot be any demand, no demand means no value.

My dilemna is not unique and because of this, I am hereby announcing that I do not plan on spending another  nickel on newspaper advertising in 2008.  The internet is just too powerful and in my estimation a better return on the precious investment dollar.

Here are several advantages that the internet has over any print media (specifically newspapers).

The internet is:

  1.  world wide
  2. local (even targeted)
  3. less rigid/ more flexible
  4. perpetual (the same message can be seen over and over)
  5. more timely (especially with blogs) and less reliant on deadlines
  6. more colorful (assuming you have a color monitor)
  7. less bureacratic (you don't have to worry about editorial guidelines)
  8. more dynamic (RSS feeds will change the internet as we know it)
  9. more creative (newspapers have looked just about the same for the last 100 years)
  10. not going away

Wow!  Looking at the bullets above just confirms my decision.  The internet makes so much more sense and dollar for dollar is a much better value.

The latest stats from the National Association of Realtors are so compelling that I have no idea why so many real estate agents are not focusing their marketing on the internet.  Did you know that over 92% of all active buyers start their search on the internet (source- NAR).

Goodbye newspapers!!!

Print is dead.  I like the look, feel and smell of newsprint, but I'm not going to spend any money on it for my business.

Tough call. I "threw out" all newspaper advertising beginning Jan. '07 as I started a strong Internet marketing initiative believing all the things you mention above. My sales are down dramatically, but then most everyone in our market (and others!) saw their sales volume decrease in '07. I think a gradual tapering off is probably a better plan. After all, there are loyal newspaper readers (older people) and those that just enjoy the Sunday paper with their coffee, that need to be directed to your web site.

Doug

I couldn't agree with you more.  i love #6 like some out there is still using a black and green monitor!  That would be funny!  I don't think they would be in the market for a home at this point maybe they should go to the library!

I am 98% internet advertising the one ad per listing is just for the homeowners at this point.

Good Luck Online

Doug, the newspaper is very traditional.  There are many that are moving away from it.  I think we should.

Hey Doug,

IMHO, advertising with the print media is like beating a dead horse. For me newpaper ads are history.

With that said, I continued to use ONE magazine ad. Just today I was re-evaluating the one ad that I did primarily (yet not exclusively) for our sellers. My ad also drives (hopefully) consumers to our site, I have noticed that our web #'s have somewhat declined. At this point, I'm not sure why? I'll continue to monitor it monthly.

Local newspaper might be okay for branding, but don't expect any calls.

If people stop advertising in the newspaper I will need to find a new fish wrapper.

Doug, I totally agree. The newspaper is not a very productive resource for advertising. The Internet is a much better and wider source for leads. If you haven't done so, look into real estate News Groups and Email Lists.

Good Post!
