Do you lend your books?

By
Services for Real Estate Pros with Marte Cliff Copywriting

Tonight we were invited to a neighbor's for pizza, and while we were there, he remembered to return a book to me.

That was wonderful, except for one thing. It wasn't my book. He said that in that case, he had no idea who had lent it to him. But... I should take it and read it because it was a good book.

Not too long ago another friend returned a set of casette tapes that she said she'd packed when she moved and then forgotten to return. And again... they weren't mine.

If you lend your books, do you remember who you lent them to? We should all be keeping track of such things if we happen to want them back, but I'm not good at it at all. But at least, lately, I've started writing "Please return to Marte Cliff" inside the front cover.

I might not remember, but if the friend I lent them to happens to think about returning them, at least he or she will know where they belong.

With all the free mailing stickers I get in the mail I would label any book with these. Easier to find me again.

Marte, I don't read much except for those things related to business and not many people are that interested in that subject.

Hi Marte~ I'm an avid reader and I do lend out my books, however I don't generally lend out the ones that I really want back, just in case they never make it back to me!

As a book collector and an avid reader I took a lesson learned from a 'grandma' of mine; I write my name in the book and when I first read the book. I do it in pencil as to not decrease collector value.  So on the inside cover it says 'Anna Hatridge, owner/first read February 2014'. Helps me get back my books and it is funny that sometimes it does take a decade.

Bill - Good idea!

Tammie - The only time I lent a "business book" was when I was going on vacation and hoped others in my office would read it. It was Tom Hopkins "How to List and Sell Real Estate." When I got back, no one had bothered, so I took it home.

Donna - That's a good plan. I have only 2 that were never returned and I missed. One actually wasn't a book, but a video that had been given to me by a raging White Supremacist (one of my more interesting customers) who had been a protestor at Ruby Ridge. It showed the uncensored version of what went on there - including the helicopters circling the cabin and the number of protestors at the gate. I lent it to someone at work, and when I asked everyone said they'd hunted but couldn't find it, so it wasn't them. I wish I still had that one. As for the other one - I bought another copy.

Anna - My son said I need to build a library, but darn! I'm no carpenter. I buy business books at the bookstore, and buy used "entertainment books" at the monthly sale at the library ($2 or $3 for a whole bag full). I read about one a day while other people are watching TV. There's not room for all of them, so I donate them back for someone else to buy. I don't lend them because I'm the only person I know who reads mysteries.

Good morning, Marte.... after I finish reading a good book, I will give it to someone who I think will like it, too.... I only ask that they do the same and pass it along to someone else...

I recall a time when I collected everthing I read, fiction and reference.  Then, when moving, I realized I had about 25 boxes of books to move.

Instead, I simply carted them in a few loads to the Salvation Army.

Now, I have 3 books for reference.  Keep it simple, Lenn.

Marti, guilty as charged! I lend them out and usually never see them again. Will start putting my name on the inside front cover. Enjoy your day!

Marte, I've had it on both sides....lost books that even folks in my book group forgot to give back to me and I've forgotten to return a book or two, through the years (is there an emoticon for chagrin??)

I LOVE my books, so IF I lend them out, it's only to people I trust. I just lent one that a friend of mine wrote to my newest buyer. He's already reading it, and likes it (whew) and I know that he will return it, because I'm going to be IN his and his wife's life for quite awhile!!! (Plus, he'll be a neighbor, and he's going to let me borrow his camera tripod to try out, so what goes around comes around--in a good way!)

More often than not, I don't really expect a book back that I've given (or lent) to someone else.  Getting it back just means less space for a new book.

I've converted to e-books for the most part.  The one major down-side is that they are very difficult to share.

Barbara - We do that with the Westerns I buy for my husband. The man who tends our landfill likes the same kind of books, so we give them to him and tell him to pass them on. There used to be someone working at a local bank who liked mysteries and I often passed mine along to her. My copywriting books don't go anywhere - not that anyone here would want them!

Lenn - Only 3 books. I don't think I could do that.

Wayne - It's not a guarantee that they'll come back, but at least no one will say "I wonder who lent this to me?"

Rob - And if it's not important, then it's OK if they don't come back.

Gayle - Yes, and doesn't that feel good?

Pat - I've thought about ebooks, but I don't have a reader and don't want to sit at the computer to read. I like to curl up in a good chair or keep the book in my hand while I'm standing by the kitchen stove.

Patty - It might help.

I am a book collector and have an emotional attachment to my books. Do not lend them out. Hate when the books come back with dog ears! Don't judge me! lol

Ben - You probably don't go to the used book sale, buy mysteries, and read one every day. Your books are likely more substantial than the ones I read for entertainment.

I have a certain few that I wouldn't lend, either.
