This is for you...Eric

This week I got some bad news. My co-worker Eric had died from breast cancer. Yes that’s right breast cancer. This year alone 2,400 men will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer.

Eric was a positive person and a teacher. When he was diagnosed he jumped in feet first. He was very active in educating people that yes men can get breast cancer. While I feel weird writing about his battle, I think he would like that he has one more chance of educating people about this disease.

A combination of the fact many men don’t know they can get breast cancer and the embarrassment of having it often lead to diagnoses during the later stages of the disease. Just like with women, finding the cancer early increases the survival rates.

According to the Susan G Komen Foundation , here are some of the warning signs. If you have any change in the breast or chest area can be a warning sign of breast cancer. Those changes include:

• Hard knot, lump or thickening in the breast (usually painless, but may be tender)

• Redness, puckering or dimpling of the skin of the breast

• Rash or scaly, itchy sore on the nipple

• pulling in of the nipple (inverted nipple) or other parts of the breast

• nipple discharge

If you notice any of these symptoms, please go see your doctor.
