My First Weekend in Woodstock,NY

It was Spring of '03 and my best friend who just purchased her first house in Woodstock has invited me and 10+ other city girl friends to stay over Easter weekend. The air was so fresh, the streams were streaming with fresh, crystal clear water from the mountains. My dogs ( they were still puppies) were just running around like little rabbits thru the property with big smiles in their faces. I felt like 10 years old again on a school trip with my friends.

We explored our first day with a beautiful AM hike, 5 Miles up hill !!! We first stopped by at a Buddhist Temple on top of a hill, which I never expected to see in upstate NY.  A temple in Woodstock, NY ?! My friends and I could not believe it. I felt like we were  somewhere in Tibet. It was a nice surprise, but then off we went to our BIG hike. We all of course thought it would be an easy and fun hike, everybody thought it was like  walking thru New York Central Park....wow were we wrong !  Oh and nobody brought water with us.

The first mile was great, all my friends were chatting away and admiring the scenery, but pretty soon our legs were getting tired and the chatting becoming quite. The puppies were leading the way and soon after the 2nd mile we were all starting huffing and puffing. Remember it was all up hill...almost like in a constant 45 Degree. Even though it was a tough hike, we all still managed to chat away and enjoyed every moment of it.

Finally after like 2 1/2 hours...we have reached the very top and the views were incredible....Catskills mountain. But now we all had to walk down the hill...the good thing, it felt easier on our legs and faster to get down ! By that time one of my puppies had to be carried by one the girls. He was just too exhausted even to bark.

We all became  very thirsty and could not wait to get back to the house.  After another 2 hours or so, we finally arrived at the house.  The Hot tub was awaiting for us....and to end a wonderful first day in Woodstock we all had a wonderful dinner on the deck under the bright skies listening to the waterstreams, it was a perfect weekend inWoodstock,NY with my friends.

Ella,

You paint a great picture, and I was one of those huffers and puffers, now I run up the mountain.  I think we should take Steve's advice and take a hike to NH as it's not that far away!

Ella -

Great, vivid story!  I felt like I was with you!

Enjoy the Easter Weekend.

Now, I know there is more to Woodstock than Yasger's Farm, 1969 (but you probably don't remember that!)

Woodstock is a wonderful place. We would always go there in the fall from the late sixties to thru the 70's. Remember many of the folks whpo live there came in the 60's for the first concert and never left. So a buddist temple is actually not that surprising

Good morning Ella,

Welcome to Rain and congratulations on a well written post. As I read along I could relate to your experience. I grew up in New York State, the Adirondack region. A group of us went to the Lake George Area for a weekend of sightseeing and hiking. Ill prepared as we were for the event we enjoyed the beauty of nature and brought home many lasting memories.

Have a great day!
