Beautiful Blue Jays in California

Western Scrub-Jays are very loud and protective of their nests. Also they bury food and have the ability to remember where they have buried the items, often weeks later.

The Jays usually know where all the birds of prey have their nest. Just before dusk, they will stand nearby and make a big fuss if there is an owl or hawk sleeping. Just before the bird of prey wakes up, they run off and hide. Such a comical feat for such a little Blue Jay.

This little bird gets mad every time I show up at one of my listings. She must have a nest inside the hedge and she just fusses and shrieks at me. I usually take a few pictures and then leave as I do not want her upset. See her hiding in the bushes below but still fussing as I was leaving.

Kristin, there was a blue jay who used to live on my block, and he could really hold his own against my carnivorous preditor kitty.

Hi Tony & Darcy,

I was excited to see this bird as this specie is not real prevelent in this area. It was a sunny day so the pictures look like there is a screen over the lens.

Hi Patricia,

I can believe that as this girl was loud and aggressive and any bird who tantalizes raptor birds must have some spunk. Thanks for stopping. I have seen birds chasing dogs and cats and they were running away from the bird. It is a funny site isn't it?

Blue Jays are really such a beautiful bird, despite their aggressive reputation.  I guess that's why so many sports teams choose them as their name.

Hi Michael,

I never thought of that connection but a good characteristic for a sports team and also the Cardinals too; Beautiful but rather aggressive.
