After a failed attempt to pass a Parkland Initiative last year, Santa Clarita City Council members are hoping to pass a revised plan in the near future. The City claims that the prior initiative failed because it was too complicated, allowed for automatic increases, and was put to vote at the wrong time of the year (when property tax bills were being received). The initiative would have added about $25 to each property owner's property tax bill, and would have provided about $1.4 million annual for the City of Santa Clarita to buy and maintain natural lands as well as developing parks and sports fields.

The revised Open Space and Parkland Preservation District plan, also called an Open Space Plan, is expected to be more simplified than the prior version and marketed in a more consumer-friendly manner. The Open Space plan is intended to help retain a portion of the land in the Santa Clarita Valley as parkland instead of letting it be sold to developers.
