I showed a home yesterday to a cute young couple who have never bought a home before, and knew nothing about the process. When they walked up to the dilapidated home they picked to see, you could just read the stress on their faces. They were unsure what they needed to do, they were uncertain as to what I was going to do, they were just uncertain about everything. We also had a slight language barrier that we quickly overcame with a smile.
Yep, a smile. As soon as I saw how tense they were, I started slowly teaching them what it meant to buy a home. We were looking at a $120,000 wreck of a home and I was mentioning to the husband that he needed to wait on buying his new Maserati until after a closing and why. This got him to laugh.
We discussed pre-qualifying. He thought that meant he had to pay someone money. Once we cleared this up he smiled again. A little more teaching, a little more humor and we were well on our way! When the couple left they were looking forward to talking to a loan officer whose name and number I provided. They understood the process much better, and I could see the relief in their faces.
This couple really made my day, and I hope I helped make theirs. Someday soon they are going to be brand new homeowners living the American dream. Hopefully I will be able to post their smiling faces here as I hand over keys to their new home.
