The Sahara Desert Takes a Vacation

By

For those of you who follow me on my blog, you may recall my daughter lives in Switzerland. I can only imagine how excited she was to wake up this morning with the snow caps of the Alps in the short distance and sand the color of guava jam orange on her window sill and a light cover of sand covering the roof tops of the Swiss Chalets.

She sent me pictures of her making mini sand castles but for some strange reasons I was able to see them; yet when I tried to copy I get blank photos. So you'll have to close your eyes and imagine what they looked like. She also sent me an article in German that simply says the phenomenon of the Sahara sands blows over the Alps in the direction of Switzerland.

Inquisitive minds wants to know more and I discovered that much of the beach sand in Florida actually comes from the Sahara Desert and it has been blowing over the Atlantic since the ice ages. They call it Saharna Air Layer if you want to learn more. This was news to me and I thought I'd share it with you. My only regret is that I can't share my daughters photos of her playing in the sand making mini castles overlooking the beautiful countryside with the Swiss Alps in the background.

I think we ALL need a vacation. Don't you???

Patricia,

What a neat fact you just shared, and I had no idea that Sahara sand blows over the Atlantic, and makes it to the Swiss Alps...Please share your pictures when they come, and a vacation sounds good to me.  A

I concur... we could ALL use a vacation! Even the desert sands of Africa! Thanks for your great comments! I think there's enough people in the RAIN for someone to organize a pleasant vacation for a group with a group discount. Any thoughts?

Good morning, Patricia --- ahhh, a vacation sounds nice and although the Sahara sounds interesting, it probably wouldn't be at the top of my list right now.

This is very interesting. I did not know about sand being carried such long distances.

Yes, some of us do need a vacation.

How fascinating Patricia.  I would love to see these photos and for sure, time for you to take a vacation and visit her in Switzerland.  The Sahara is most interesting-I am so looking forward to Morocco and our desert trek and I will take pictures but who would have thunk that the winds go across the Mediterranean and impact Switzerland!  Hope you are well my dear!

I did not know your daughter lives in Switzerland. What a beautiful country to live in. I lived on the Swiss border to Germany for years and loved it! We used to travel to Switzerland all the time.

Good afternoon, Patricia. I did not know that your daughter lived in Switzerland either. By the way, I'm flying into Dallas on Sunday. I will be there for a few days on business. I would love to have an opportunity to meet up with you.

All... for some reason I'm not getting any notifications that I have comments on AR and even if you post a comment, I wouldn't know unless I looked. It's been days now... hopefully someone will fix that issue.

Thanks for all your comments!

Michael... The Sahara Desert doesn't appeal to me either; however, a vacation on a sandy beach does!

Debb... the Alps have been calling me for some time now. I'm long overdue! I could sure use some mileage points or a buddy pass. It would be wonderful if I could visit my daughter and son-in-law again!

Roy.... I have no doubt that you and Dolores could use a nice vacation. I think we all need one but you especially!

Joanna... your trip to Morocco sounds like a dream vacation! I'm looking forward to reading all about it and seeing your photographs. Whenever I hear the word Morocco, I think of The Road to Morocco with Bob Hope and Bing Crosby. Those were such great movies! Your trip is coming up and that's truly exciting!!!

Sharon... me too! The color of the sand was very unique! She said it's making a mess on her car though. I wonder if there's gold in that sand?

Barbara-Jo... she lives in Lucerne on the German side. It's sooooooo beautiful there! I hope you get back there soon!!! I wish my daughter and her husband could meet your son!

Michael.... would like to see you in Dallas. That would be cool! Call me when you get in and we can make plans. I have a closing on Monday morning; otherwise I can make exceptions and meet you.

Good morning Patricia. Thank you for sharing today's lesson in geology. I always enjoy the learnings that I get on AR each and every day.

I was not aware of your daughter living in Switzerland, thank you for sharing a bit about her.

Thanks Patricia.  Those Sahara sands blowing over the Atlantic do a pretty good job of stopping hurricanes in the summer.
