Does it Bother You If Your Friends, Relatives Don't Use Your Services?

Reblogger Beth and Richard Witt

I am sure that we have all felt slighted when a friend or family member uses another realtor to buy or list their home. For sure I have!

After reading this post of Noah's I don't think I will feel as slighted in the future.

It's so wise to always look at the big picture before condemning the actions of others and so "Good for our bodies".

Another good Noah post... enjoy it... and learn a valuable lesson...

Ever get pissed off or feel hurt inside when you find out that your Uncle used another Realtor to list their home? Does it make you upset if your "best friend" uses a different person to find a home to buy? It can sting. It used to bother me. Crying one

I could not figure out why they did all not call me. Sure I have had a bunch of people close to me who have used me to buy or sell property, but not everyone. One day I was at a listing appointment and having a serious talk with the home owner a woman who had just been divorced. She is a financial planner and we started really hitting it off and talking about our work.

She said to me that her favorite neighbor across the street was a Realtor as we walked around. Then she said to me "heck I don't want her to know my business, that is why I called you". Then she said that she has someone do her finances, her 401k and IRA that she hired away from her own company.

As I left, contract in hand I got to thinking. I don't want to get too heavy here but if your Aunt Sally who you really loved was a doctor would you like to have her examine you in an intimate way to make sure you were healthy? Not me, I want someone I do not know all that well personally but professionally yes. Even if my aunt was top notch and it was common knowledge I think I would pass on a prostate exam.

Enough of that. Do not let your ego get hurt if you find out the friend of family member did not use you to buy or sell their home. It does not mean you are a bad Realtor. Do not hold any grudge inside about what that did and congratulate them when you hear, don't mention your feelings

Hmm...  Sometimes this can be a real conundrum. There are relatives in my wife's side of the family that I literally cringe when I think they may be about to ask for real estate assistance. I don't want to know their personal stuff and, I don't want to be the lightning rod when something doesn't go to their way of thinking it should.

There are some relatives I would give the shirt off my back and would do anything real estate-wise I could to be of help. But, I know these folks will be appreciative regardless of how the transaction plays out, because they know and accept that there is only so much we can do as advocates on their behalf.

For me, it's really a case-by-case situation and, what the potential familial relationship risks are that need to be considered before taking on a relative as a client.

Richard and Beth - Thanks for reblogging this post. It does make sense that people that are close can feel put off by having their intimate (financial) details exposed and this article puts things in perspective.

It bothered the hell out of me when a close relative chose to sell a home I sold them, through another broker.  Took a long time to get over.  I guess I'm not evolved enough yet.

There were several agents in my last neighborhood, Beth. Some sellers wouldn't choose any of us because they were afraid to hurt someone else's feelings.

Good morning Beth. There is a purpose and reason for everything, as you well know. At the time we don't always understand the message, but over time we understand.
