Got Trees?
Everyone knows the importance of the kitchen and master bedroom when it comes to selling your home. However, do not forget about the impact of your home's landscaping. Consider this quote when asking yourself how important landscaping is:
"In one study, 83% of realtors believe that mature trees have a "strong or moderate impact" on the salability of homes listed for under $150,000; on homes over $250,000, this perception increases to 98%." -Arbor National Mortgage & American Forests
There are many reasons to plant trees and flowers. The biggest reason is for the pure enjoyment of nature!!! Working in the yard can be a great stress reliever. I just like being outside in the fresh air while my daughter chases my Lab around our backyard.
The next reasons came to me as I was reading The Value of Plants and Landscaping by the American Nursery & Landscaping Association. The first highlight that stood out to me was that "Landscaping can reduce air conditioning cost by up to 50%" -American Public Power Association. The second was that "Trees can reduce bothersome noise by up to 50 percent" -U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Who wouldn't want cheaper power bills and a quieter environment?
When landscaping your yard, the important thing is to make sure you are spending your time and money wisely. With a little effort and a little planning, you will add value to your home. This may mean hiring a professional in some situations. Just take your time to select trees and plants that fit your yard and personality. I personally prefer plants that require moderate care. I tried roses but found they were a bit needy for me. So then I planted lilies and they have flourished in my yard.
If you are planting to sell right away, you should read Home Landscaping Ideas and the Real Estate Market by David Beaulieu. This is a good website article that provides links to other resources. I also found an article on the Realtor site as well. It is a little generic but it has a couple of good points and has a helpful link page.
Finally, you could join The Arbor Day Foundation. I joined for $15 and the sent me a free catalog and 10 free oak tree seedlings. My daughter and I have planted them and check on them daily. It is our little routine and more important some time we spend together. The Arbor Day Foundation also has a page dedicated to the benefits of trees that I suggest reading.
I hope you find this information helpful about the importance of adding trees and flowers to your landscaping. Happy planting!!!
