Just to clear up some general misunderstandings about the budding and pervasive industry and growing market for, Granny Flats, Casitas, etc
PARK MODEL (Above): Don't become confused about what is and what isn't an "ADU". A PARK MODEL by definition is a RECREATION VEHICLE (RV) under 400 square feet. It is not to be construed, and most, if not at all times, not zoned or ever permitted to be used as an "ADU" by most building jurisdictions.
I will donate an entire post on "PARK MODELS" in my next post because it can and has been a real problem for many unwary purchasers because of its very attractive pricing and mobility.
Probably one of the most commonly used and acceptable synonyms for an "ADU" is "Granny Flat". But it doesn't end there. There is a flurry of acceptable words to substitute and frankly they may be more commonly accepted and understood.

- Granny Room
- Granny Annexe
- Inlaw Flats
- Casitas
- Cottages
- Detached Dwellings
- Detached Suites
- Detached Living Units
- Additional Dwellings
- Carriage House
- Ancilliary Unit
- Secondary Unit
- Guest Suite
- Getaway Suite
- Extra Unit
- Extra Dwelling
- Garage Apartment
I recommend people use “accessory dwelling” or “accessory dwelling unit,” despite their somewhat bureaucratic sound. For better or worse, these are the terms used most by planners and inspectors and governments, who you may want to work with or influence. And these terms are general enough they incorporate all the architectural forms of this kind of dwelling, whereas something like “granny cottage” does not.
But please, whatever you’re doing in the field–building ADUs or protesting them–for the sake of sanity please don’t add another synonym.
