Considered the oldest kite festival in the country, the Austin Kite Festival 2014 beckons kite lovers from all across the nation.  You don't have to own a kite to come to the event.  You can simply be a spectator.  However, there will be a kite contest at Zilker Park for anyone interested who wants to show off their homemade single line kites.  Registration begins at 11am, with the contest itself starting at 1pm.  First through third places will be awarded trophies in eight different contests: 50 yard dash (kids only), highest angle kite (kid and adult categories), steadiest kite (kid and adult categories), strongest pulling kite, smallest kite, most unusual kite (kid and adult categories), largest kite and youngest/oldest kite fliers in the competition.

You won't need any money to enter the Austin Kite Festival 2014, but you might want to bring some cash for the dozens of food vendors on-site or if you'd like to purchase a commemorative T-shirt.  Since Barton Springs Rd will be closed the day of the festival, you can park at the State Garages or Toney Burger center absolutely free of charge.  Shuttles are available for $3 round trip per person (ages 12 and over).  Kids under 12 years old and dogs can ride the shuttle for free.

In addition to kite flying, kids will have lots of fun playing in the bounce house, climbing the rock wall, getting their faces painting, trying their hand at bungee jumping and even racing the slot cars.  If watching the Austin Kite Festival 2014 strikes up the urge to start flying your own kite, there will be vendors on-site ready to get you geared up to go.  Proceeds from the Austin Kite Festival 2014 will benefit Communities in Schools Austin, a program that helps encourage students to stay in school rather than drop out.

Shay-Kite flying-that brings back memories. I've not done that since my son was a kid. Nothing like it on a windy spring day.
