Hello friends,

Just a quick note to let you all know about a wonderful event coming up on March 30.  The Postwar Pasadena, a tour of eight architecturally significant homes.  I have the honor of docenting at the King Residence, an amazing example of Buff and Hensman architecture.  All of the furniture and most of the art in this residence was created and built by Buff and Hensman.

House Tour: Sunday, March 30, 2008 - 9 AM - 4 PM

Pasadena Heritage presents Postwar Pasadena, a tour featuring eight privately-owned homes
that are outstanding examples of Pasadena's Modern architecture.

Following World War II, the building boom in Southern California saw a new interest in architectural experimentation. Architects who trained at the University of Southern California, many of whom lived and worked in Pasadena, had such a profound impact of the local built environment that the term "Pasadena style" was coined by the historian Esther McCoy. This local variation of Modernism was unique in its blending of innovation and tradition, perhaps best expressed by the Craftsman influence found in the designs of the influential local firm of Buff & Hensman.

Stops on the tour include the King Residence and Rapor, two homes designed by Buff & Hensman that reveal the architects' fascination with challenging, visually arresting sites. The tour will also visit the Matthews Residence, designed in 1966 by the prominent firm of Pulliam, Zimmerman & Matthews, and Thornton Ladd's elegant Lyon Residence (1950), which centers upon an extraordinary glass-walled bridge. At two classic 1950s homes designed by Leland Evison and Caspar Ehmcke, tour-goers will learn about sensitive remodel solutions for mid-century residences.

Pasadena Heritage is pleased to commemorate the life and work of the talented builder Ted Tyler (1916-2007) with the inclusion on the tour of his own hilltop residence designed in 1958. The Stuart Pharmaceutical Building, Edward Durell Stone's gem of New Formalism from the same year, will also be open for visits and refreshments throughout the day of the tour.
