Once again the RVA Home Team with Jefferson Properties is proud to have Kathy Jenkins, CEO & Founder of Come To Order, provide us some fabulous organizational tips. If you are thinking of selling your property, this is for you! Making your closets look as spacious as possible is essential to staging your house for sale on the Richmond VA real estate market! Take it away, Kathy!

Five Steps to an Organized Closet

Five Steps to an Organized ClosetDo you ever still play the game hide-and-seek?  I’m sure you do… have you been in your closet lately?  I’m sure you have a shirt or a belt that has been hiding from you just when you need it.

Well, with a little bit of time and effort, you can have a clutter-free closet and create more storage space for the things you need.  Whether it is organizing for your sanity or staging to sell a home, try following these five tips for a neatly organized closet…

  1. Clothes go out of style, become too big or too small, or maybe you just don’t like something anymore.  Sort through your clothing, belts and scarves.  Anything you have not worn in the past year, it is time to part with.  To help you with this process, repurpose an old shopping bag as a donate bag – and use it all the time! When it’s full, deliver it to your local charity, and start a new donate bag.

  2. Organize clothes by style and colors.  Group short sleeve/sleeveless blouse/shirt, long sleeved blouse/shirt, jackets, pants, capris, skirts, dresses, suits, etc. This makes mixing and matching easier.  Grouping cloths with similar colors makes mixing and matching easier, too!

  3. You’re not quite ready to part with something?  Re-hang all of your clothes with the hanger backwards. When you wear something, turn the hanger around. In a couple of months, it will be obvious what you don’t wear. Now part with it!

  4. Shoes are supposed to come in pairs, right?  I’m sure you have some shoes that aren’t quite pairs anymore… again, playing hide-and-seek.  I suggest you use shoe racks to keep shoes from becoming a pile on the floor. Group by type and then color. For example, keep dress shoes together and line them up by the colors of the rainbow. On another rack, organize your casual shoes the same way.  This way, you’ll be sure to always have a pair when you are looking for them.

  5. Now that your closet is organized, keep it that way!  When shopping, remember that nothing goes into your closet without one thing coming out. When you know you have to give up something old to buy something new, it’s easier to decide if the new item is something you really need or something you can do without.

I am in the process of going through my closet, sorting and getting rid of things not worn in a year. My husband tends to keep old, torn t-shirts and socks...they are next to sort!
