Strawberry Fields Forever...In Carlsbad

By
Real Estate Agent with eXp Realty of California, Inc. CA DRE #01490977

Strawberry field in CarlsbadCarlsbad has reputation for a number of things – the beaches, golf, the weather, the mineral springs, Legoland, the La Costa Resort and Spa, the Four Seasons Aviara, AND strawberry fields forever.

Maybe not forever, but there sure are a lot of them. It is now strawberry season and they are in abundance, with many more to come. Prices are coming down and will, in the next month or two, reach a ridiculous level where you can’t NOT buy a huge flat of berries for less than a Mocha Frappachino Carmel Latte at Starbucks. Much better for you, by the way, too.

The berries are huge, as you can see in the photo, and the flavor is incredible at this time of year. While the berries are plentiful at the fruit stands (forget the grocery stores – their prices are still high) the best places to buy them are at the source…the strawberry fields themselves.

Other than picking yourself, they don’t get any fresher. And these are the size of berries that are ripe for chocolate dipping…so go ahead.

The best place, IMO, are the fields right near Car Country, at the intersection of Cannon Road and the 5 freeway south of Carlsbad Village. There are acres and acres of strawberry bushes, and an army of about 100 workers picking during the early part of the day. This area, however, remains in controversy – some folks want to see the area developed, while the majority wish the area to remain agricultural, as it has been since long before the 5 freeway was built. A ballot measure approved by the voters late last year declares that 300 acres of this area that are privately owned are to remain in open space.

And of course you remember the famous "Strawberry Fields Forever" by the Beatles.

Jeff, I LOVE fresh strawberries. We get some really nice ones around here but they will not be in season for a few more months.  But after reading this blog I don't know if I can wait that long :)

Yummm....strawberry shortcake....

I came back to say I like the way they dig the furrows through the strawberry fields. My cousin used to grow strawberries and we had to crawl on the ground to pick them. This makes it look so much better and easier to pick them.

Your strawberries here look much better than the ones at the store I just bought.

Jeff, not many pleasures are greater than that of delicious fresh strawberries, with or without chocolate.

George - they are my favorite fruit. While we can get them year-round, they really are sensational from March through June or July. Sounds like a trip to the fruit stand is in order.

Linda - well it is certainly different from the fields I grew up with. The problem near the coast is the dampness from the marine layer. My understanding is the berry plants grow better the way they are raised in these beds away from some of the dampness. Certainly you don't have to bend down as far to pick them. Oh, and, yes, the strawberry shortcake has been popular around here; also good with lemon pound cake.

Brian -  so true. I actually prefer them without chocolate. I don't mind picking them but it's even better to stop by this Carlsbad fruit stand and grab a large container of them.

Mary - agreed. There are so many agricultural areas that have been taken over by development in Carlsbad, and nice to know some have been preserved.

Jeff, Ohhhhh....you are really tempting me!  I was just mapping out my trip on Google.  I could be there in less than 5 hours..... then I thought about the price of gas. :(

Too bad we don't have 'scratch n sniff' on our computer screens. Althought, I believe I can smell them from here. I almost bought some from CA the other day but price was so high and they pick them too earlier to allow ripening on the ride here. They sure look good.

Elaine - now there is an interesting technology idea. You experience is the same I always had back in Boston. Now that we are practically in the midst of the fields (and of other produce as well) it is easy to get spoiled by the freshness and quality...AND the lower prices.

Bill and Barbara Jo - don't you love it? There is a huge strawberry festival further north where they have everything strawberry - champagne, beer, and on and on. I have not been but hear it is quite a big deal.
