Sunday night millions of viewers tuned in to watch the Oscars, and by evening’s end; the haters were fast at work at their computers spewing filth and vile towards another human being. Who was the topic of conversation? Well, let’s see…we had John Travolta for mispronouncing the name of a singer he was supposed to introduce. We had Matthew McConaughey for daring to thank God for the many blessings he thinks God bestowed upon him.
The subject of the most hatred directed at them was actress, Kim Novak. At 81, she was presenting an award along with Matthew McConaughey. Ms. Novak is most famous for her role in the Alfred Hitchcock's film Vertigo. But instead of honoring and supporting her acting career, all the haters could talk about was the plastic surgery she had done to her face. Here are just a few of the things said about her in the “official” press…
Robert Rorke of the New York Post commented that Ms Novak's appearance as one of the "eight weirdest Oscar moments"."Rorke further added, “Looking like Cesar Romero on Batman and sounding like Jimmy Durante, the hoarse Novak got through the presentation, but left us wondering whether extreme plastic surgery shouldn't be illegal in Hollywood.”
The headline in USA Today read, "Kim Novak takes a beating on Twitter". Howard Fineman, from The Huffington Post tweeted: "#AcademyAward for worst plastic surgery: tie between Kim Novak and Goldie Hawn."
Outside of the press we had Donald Trump saying, "Kim should sue her plastic surgeon.” Here are a few more ugly comments, and frankly these people aren’t deserving of even having their names mentioned…”Oh my god did Kim Novac (this person can’t even spell) shove her face into a bee hive?”… “Oh hey Kim Novac,(another person who doesn’t know the last name ends in a K and not a C) you know what doesn't have freedom? Your face.”
To all of you who wrote nasty, hateful, hurtful things…shame on you! For a moment, put yourself in Kim Novak’s shoes on Monday morning. Imagine what it must have been like for her as she got her morning coffee and turned on the television, or picked up the newspaper, or her I-Pad and read all the garbage you slung in her direction. While she may be famous, and she may still have more money than you; she is still a human being. No one deserves to be treated like that.
Perhaps at this point, it is worth noting that Ms Novak recently battled breast cancer, and a serious horse-back riding injury. In addition, throughout her career she was subjected to cruelty that you and I would have wilted under the pressure of. Movie producer, Harry Cohn, who was credited with discovering Ms Novak, was often fond of saying, "I made you, I can break you.” To further show his “love” towards Novak, he put her on a stringent diet, all the while calling her 'that fat Polack' (Novak's background is Czech) behind her back. Sort of reminds you of the Indian adage about walking a mile in someone else’s moccasins…doesn’t it?
You know, when we hear stories of a child in school driven to suicide because of cyber bullying, we think how could children be so cruel? Yet, after the past few days, do we really have to stop and wonder where kids pick up this character flaw? We make wonderful role models don’t we?
Just because someone is in the public spotlight doesn’t mean that they possess magic powers to deflect the arrows shot their way. How would any of us feel to be totally judged on our self-worth by our appearance…then to have someone publically humiliate us…all for the horrible sin of being 81 years old?
As a civilization, it seems we still enjoy throwing people to the lions…only now we do it electronically.
I’ll end with this quote from Mother Teresa…Even the rich are hungry for love, for being cared for, for being wanted, for having someone to call their own.
