New Hampshire Springs Forward

This weekend is the beginning of Daylight Saving Time for 2014,

Since 2007, daylight saving time begins on the second Sunday in March and ends on the first Sunday in November.

The law in the United States does not require any state to adopt daylight saving time.

Some states do not observe daylight saving time and they remain on standard time.  Arizona, with the exception of the Navajo nation, remains on standard time.  Hawaii and the territories of the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, America Samoa and Guam do not observe daylight saving time.

More than one billion people in approximately 70 countries around the world observe daylight saving time.  You can read more about the history of daylight saving time in the United States and all around the world.

By the way, did you know that it is Daylight Saving Time and not Daylight SavindS time. Time saving is used as a verbal adjective (a participle) which modified time... and refers to the saving of daylight..  Now that will put you to sleep!  :)  In New Hampshire we will gain 2 hrs and 33 minutes of light!

Don't forget to spring forward and change batteries in smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors.

Joan, it was very important to be sure my clocks were changed last night, as I have a busy real estate day, and cannot afford to be an hour late!

Jennifer ~  I was a little sleepy this morning... but it was well worth the additional light this evening.

William ~  It certainly makes it easier for folks to view properties after work.  Now, if we can get some warm weather, they be able to see the yard too!

Joan ~  I ran into a couple of people today who forgot to change their clocks.  I set mine ahead before I went to sleep so I could be up and running for showings.

Margaret ~  Glad you got to sleep an hour early.  I tried to do that, but I couldn't fall asleep.  Oh well, I will survive.

Toni ~  I think it is interesting that not all states adopt daylight saving.

Richie  ~  I don't think you are alone.  I know some folks that would prefer staying on the same time all year long.

Sharon ~  I can't wait for spring.  It looks like we have a little more winter to go here in NH.

Gail ~  It is a very interesting story.  I'm hoping spring is on the way.

Hannah ~  I'm with you.  I love spring and I love the extra daylight.

George ~ I don't mind losing an hour of sleep to gain more than an hour of daylight.

Joan,

Great post!  I love how you explain the basics of the law.  I didn't realize so many other countries have DST.

Joan, I'm still trying to adjust.  Also, other countries do not necessarily adjust their time when we do so there are changes in the time differences for a while until they catch up.  Important to know for those of us who work with clients in other countries.

Hi Joan, I love this time of year. Oddly for me, at least in the first couple of months of Daylight Savings time seems to make the days disappear more quickly. In late April and from then on the days last so much longer.

Isn't it amazing that we all (well almost all of us) agree to move our hours up in the Spring and back in the Fall?

It is so nice to have that extra daylight time, and the days are getting longer, too. Now I have some daylight to walk in after I leave the office.
