The picture below is of Little Man.  I brought him to my home when he was 2 years old due to the fact that his original owner was no longer able to care for him.  His weight was only 52 lbs.  Not an average weight for a male german shepherd.  After carefully evaluating him it was discovered that he had a eating problem and was no longer able to bark.  This was in November 2007.

After being seen at the  University of Missouri Columbia Veterinary Hospital it was known that Little Man had some real problems.  He had Megaesophagus, Bilateral Laryngeal Paralysis, and a Vascular Ring Anomaly.  Most people probably would of just put him down, but I really felt this Little Man needed a chance in life.  He was so full of love and wanted so much to please you.

A plan was put in place and the first thing to do was put in a g-tube (feeding tube).  After many challenges with this we now after 3 months have accomplished to get his weight up to 75 lbs.  We needed the weight on him to get him ready for his next surgery which will be coming up in May 2008.  At this time we will discuss whether to either address the Vascular Ring Anomaly or do a surgical procedure to tie back the flap of one side of his  airway so he will be able to breathe a little better.

If we do the Vascular Ring Anomaly first chances of some swelling in the throat may occur which could block off the airway causing us to have to do a trach for a short time til the swelling goes down.   If we tie back the flap first then we would have to carefully watch his eating/drinking so that he doesn't develope aspiration pneumonia.  If anyone reading this article has had any experience with this please let me know how it turned out for you.   The picture below is of Little Man when we first brought him back from spending 4 weeks in Columbia.

He's got such a sweet face and is so lucky to have found you.  You truly have a kind heart.

He is a doll baby.  I love Shepherds.  I used to raise and show them.  I don't have any experience with this problem but logically speaking it would seem that there is less risk doing a trach than risking aspirational pneumonia.

What a cutie!  You have a warm heart and I'm sure he'll return your kindness tenfold!

Yes, He is a real sweetheart.  What more deserving than a dog who appreciates what you do for him/her.

An update for Little Man - His vet appointment went well today and he has increase his weight up to 78 lbs.  Which we never thought we would see this happen.  We had scheduled surgery for the end of May to cut the bands from around his throat area (Vascular Ring Anomaly) in hopes he would be able to eat better.

Tonight around 7 p.m. Little Man ate part of his feeding tube and part of it is still inside him.  I saw it and ran to get the tweezers, but it had already gone inside him.  I immediately called his Dr. at Columbia, Mo. and she said to go ahead and wait and see if he will pass the tube.  If he doesn't pass the tube within 24 hours he may have a blockage and we may have to do surgery.

I just couldn't believe that this was happening.  We have had such good luck with this tube and then this.

Due to this incident and depending on how everything goes we may be forced to move the schedule ahead.

Right now he seems to be  resting comfortably, but I don't like hearing him breathe so hard.

Please keep Little Man in your prayers.

Talked with Dr. Mann at University of Columbia this am - we have moved Little Mans surgery date up to May 19th unless something develops between now and then.  So far he is doing fine - still waiting for the tube to pass.

Elizabeth, Poor little guy!  He is so cute!  I hate to see him go through all of this but I am sure that he is having a happy life with you!  Good luck!

I have no experience with this but he is so beautiful, good luck and please keep us posted...

Roberta - He has been so patient through all of this.  I don't believe I coud have tolerated as much as he has had to go through.  Thank you for your kind words.

Patrice - Thank you.  I will update his progress as we go along.  I'm still concerned that he hasn't passed the tube yet.  I hate to think of a additional surgery to remove the tube if it is causing a blockage.  So far no signs of blockage.

Little Man passed 2 sections of his tube yesterday and today.  There is still one small piece we are waiting to come through.  Hopefully it will pass soon.  Good new is at this point it looks like there is no obstruction.  The Vascular Ring Anomaly and airway surgery will be addressed on the 19th of May.  At that time one of them will be done.

Sounds like some good news. I am praying for you both. Take care!

Good to hear Elizabeth.  Poor guy, surgery again in 2 weeks...I hope he passes the last tube so you can relax before the next step

Thank you April.  We appreciate friends like you.  Have a great day!

Thank you Patrice - Little Man passed the last part of the tube this evening.  Now it is just a matter of getting more myself ready for the next surgery than Little Man.  The University of Missouri Columbia have some fine doctors - I'll keep everyone posted what our decision is on the 19th.
