Hi Carol,

Isn't it wonderful how we all have a love for nature. I tend to buy pictures and jewelry that has nature in them; hummers, dragonflies and butterflies.

Hi Silvia,

I had not seen the Mexican Bird of Paradise until I moved to Loma Linda. They were re-doing the medians and trying to use drought resistant plants and they planted these. They are still growing strong 25 years later and I have 2 huge ones in my backyard.

Kristin~ I wonder how some of these plants might do in Colorado. I think I'd like some honeysuckle. I'll have to check with my local garden center.

Hi Donna,

I think Honeysuckle is pretty resiliant to weather. Some with freeze and then come back in the spring.

Kristin-Nice photos! Since the Mexican Bird of Paradise is only hardy down to 18 degrees, it would not work for me. And someone mentioned the Butterfly Bush--in our area it is considered an invasive, although I have one and it always stays small asclepiasand the seeds do not seem to plant themselves, at least where I have it. A Delaware author, Doug Tallamy, touts native plants for the garden, because scores of insects only feed on a particular local plant, and if you plant non-native species, the local insects die off, breaking the chain of life. I attached a picture of Asclepias tuberosa from my yard (often called milkweed) which attracts birds and butterflies and is native to my area on the east coast.

Hi Carolyn,

That is fascinating what you said about planting non-native plants in an area. I had never heard that before! Thanks for sharing and I like your picture. Hopefully you will have birds and butterflies in your spring garden soon. Here's to warm weather coming shortly!

Nice post, and beautiful flowers.  In our area, the honeysuckle and monarda are quite invasive and attract the birds and butterflies from mid-Spring through the mid-Fall.  I hope your kids were able to get to the Philadelphia Flower Show before it ended last weekend.  They had a marvelous butterfly exhibit.

Hi Bette,

I think they went away for the week but they would have truly enjoyed it. Maybe next year I will go there during the time when it is at the convention center. Did the butterflies do OK in the cold outside?

Thanks for sharing the photos and information.

Never cared for the browned eyed susans. Always seemed 'weedy' to me.

They are vines I think so they climb on everything. I love the Mexican Bird of Paradise more than any other plant.

We have so may different kinds of hummingbirds in our area, that we're always searching for new and inviting plants. I'll have to see if the anemone grows in our area.

Hi Jeff,

They are pretty hardy and come in nice shades of pinks and fushias as well as white. After a few months, single plants triple in size and stems. It is amazing how well they do but if you have snails, they kill them off fast.

Just this morning my neighbor told me that she saw 2 hummingbirds on her balcony eating the nectar from her plant!  I will have to ask her which one it is.  She went to get a hummingbird feeder this afternoon!

Hi Manuela,

I am so happy to hear that as it really helps the population of hummingbirds to have people providing extra nourishment. I read recently that when the hummingbirds migrate and pass through your yard, when they return they take the same route and pass through again. I thought that was amazing.
