Can't work a teeter-totter with only one willing participant!

Do you find yourself getting aggravated during hectic days because someone else is not carrying their weight and also lacking the spirit of cooperation? I think we've all experienced this at some time in our careers and though it is not acceptable, it continues to happen.

  • You find yourself...Making necessary phone calls, text messages and emails that go unoticed or not returned, weighing negatively on deadlines.
  • You notice that...Setting appointments are not conveyed to tenants and when you show up, you look intrusive and inconsiderate, rude in the least.
  • You discover...Missing signatures, initials and dates on documents and continue producing paperwork to extend timelines to respond again, then again.

It is not enough to focus on what is before you regarding your clients and your workload but must also push to shove to get necessary documents and appointments set for an appraisal and the inspection. Thankfully, my clients are assured that I am doing my dutiful share of the workload to ensure they achieve their real estate goals.

And it is impossible work a teeter-totter with only one willing participant! Have you ever tried?

Some agents and clients also think we should do it all when in reality we can't for many reason

Susan, You make good points and being a detail oriented agent is an asset to clients and they can be assured you are working for them!

Deborah, Working through it all to get to an successful end is the goal, every time. A little cooperation helps!

Debbie, The pain is felt long after the transaction closes!

Will, So sorry that happened, yikes!

Lisa, Glad these are few and between. Love to work with 'true' professionals!

Thank you Alexandra, I appreciate the compliment!

Bill, If there was just one person handling the transaction, then we'd know the expectation and push to achieve the goals.

Love the title to this post - it made me chuckle since I seem to be the only one on the teeter totter right now on 2 transactions.  I'm the listing agent on one and the buyers representative on the other and in both cases the others involved are not on top of things at all.  It is beyond frustrating but I do whatever I have to do to get the job done.

Wanda, great analogy. I remember being on a teeter totter by myself, I was left sitting on the ground, not fun at all.

When we all do our part, it's fun for all.

Make it a great weekend.

I think this is the result of too many people thinking that this is an easy profession to be in.  I call agents who are in the middle of their kids' baseballs games, eating in the middle of a very loud restaurant, etc.  It's easy for agents in these situations to miss the details.

Fortunately for me, MOST of the area Agents have been pretty good in working their side of the balance board.....so far!

Not only do you need someone else to make the teeter totter work, you also need to have a harmonious coordination because every transaction will go back and forth till the very close of escrow. Just keep working it and it will get done! Good analogy for sure!

Terry, I wish you the best in getting them both closed! And yes, we do what is necessary to get it done.

John, I remember the other person bailing on me and slamming to the ground...owie...hurt my butt bone! It takes staying the course with both people working to get it done.

Laura, There is nothing easy about our profession and I do not expect that but I do expect a professional to be on the other side who knows their responsibilities!

Travis, Thankfully most agents I have worked with are forthright and do their share!

Sarah & Lester, It is true! Some get that and it is so appreciated when the common goal is what is best for the client.

Wanda,

We all have worked with folks who abruptly hop off the teeter totter and let us "bang" on the ground. It is usually the ones who do real estate part time. We have such an agency in town who will hire anyone with a pulse. Not a good balance.

For me, 2013 was the year where I worked with the most professional agents so far. I'm hoping 2014 will be just as great if not better.

Donna, not FUN to be on the receiving end!

Dana, It never should happen but unfortunately we cannot control the actions or lack of, when it comes to others!

Dana, I am thankful for those who put their clients first rather than not and do their part!

Your "teeter-totter" metaphor is interesting to illustrate that it takes more than one side to make real estate as business and sales work successfully.  You're right, and thanks for your post.

You are so welcome Harrison! A teeter-totter depends on 2 people for a sense of balance, so does real estate!

Wanda, really true too ofter, especially about notifying the tenants of the viewing appointment.  Also, when the owner does not notify the tenants, then I show up to meet the clients at the location, and they do not show.  Embarassing

I like the analogy.  Selling a home takes a lot of work.  Just getting the listing is not enough.

Bob, I agree. Good communication is necessary to get to a successful conclusion. Poor communication results in unecessary stress and often a lot of drama!

Lynn, You know it and how!

Thanks Gene, It is pertinent to be present in all phases of a transaction and do your part. Definitely not enough just to sign paperwork and put a sign in the yard!
