It's a drought year in Sacramento, where's the water coming from?

This Sacramento apartment community was getting a lot of standing water in and around the sidewalk of the common grounds. It hadn't rained for a while but the pooling water would not go away. The first thought was that the irrigation was running, but that wasn't the case.

This Sacramento apartment had an underground main water supply leak and didn't know it. The actual leak was under the sidewalk, caused by the growth of the tree roots. The sidewalk was opened up and the water supply leak was repaired. No more pooling water.

JayMan - It is often an irrigation issue; valves not shutting down completely, running at odd hours, etc. We shut the irrigation off for a few days.

Good thing someone had the good sense to call an expert.

Far too often the management will consult with a vendor who would make a repair.  Not good business.

An objective expert opinion is what's needed.

Tom: And it's not just WHO is paying for that water these days, we just can't waste any of it. I find that neighbors are patrolling neighbors for signs of water use. It's pretty serious stuff in California.

Tom, I bet that was a mystery for a while. Water issues are often a nightmare. Since water travels so well, it can be a challenge to find the source.

Tom, I can't remember the numbers, but there are numbers of how much water is wasted like this in most city water supplies.

hi Tom, Texas is paying attention to its water supply as well so I can appreciate the need to find the source of the pooling water. I sure hope California gets some much needed rain.

Surprised the water bill didn't reflect the leak. When water shows up there is always a reason.

Hi Tom,

Glad to hear it was fixed in quick order... We need all the water we can get in California. Some of those pesky leaks have caused land slides and sink holes. Lucky it was under the side walk where a pool of water is rather noticeable and not off in the shrubbery or somewhere that real damage could have occurred!

Just like an iceberg, sometimes we just don't know what a tree can do underneath. Glad to hear that it was fixed already or else they would be spending a lot on their water bill...

If you are in a drought situation, water is a commodity that can not be wasted. It is amazing what tree roots will do.

Hopefully that leak was caught quickly although not likely. Trees can be both beautiful and a real nuisance.

Interesting post Tom. What is actually causing the water draught in California?

It did take some time to realize the source of the water but once it was determined, finding and fixing the underground plumbing leak went rather quickly to everyone's delight.
