Ok folks. I am blowing the lid off the dirty little secret that Florida Realtors have harbored for who knows how long.
Florida is infested with cockroaches. Not just the human kind either (just kidding). And in Florida, we grow 'em big! These suckers aren't for the faint of heart.
For homebuyers relocating to Paradise from the Gulags of the snowbelt, seeing one of these creepy crawlers for the first time can be quite the Open House or private showing disrupter.
To help calm concerns of homebuyers who might see a dead (or God forbid living) critter cruising the hallways of a listing, it seems that the real estate community has adopted the strategy of rebranding these critters with the kinder, gentler name - Palmetto Bug.
Awwww.....how cute. Say it out loud a few times. Feel how smooth and calming the syllables roll off your tongue.
Now for the facts. There is indeed a Florida Woods Cockroach with a common name of Palmetto Bug. But they do not typically seek refuge inside homes and they do not have wings like the American Cockroach which we most commonly find living rent free inside our homes.
So the next time you see a cousin of this guy....
rest assured....it's a cockroach. If it sprints like a cockroach and flies like a coackroach and hangs out around you box of Fruity Pebbles, then sorry to say, it's a cockroach.
Stop the madness Realtors! Don't insult the Palmetto Bugs. Your ethics class must have skipped the chapter about being truthful about the unsettling reality that Florida is indeed infested with these little guys and gals.
Do the honest thing and remind your homebuyer that their monthly budget must be increased to make a quarterly contribution to the thriving Florida pest control industry. Sit them down and reassure your clients that they can expect to see these uninvited guest in their home from time to time but with proper pest control they will look more like this:
Stop the madness Realtors! You're better than this! Remember, they were here first and we are simply guests in their kingdom.
