Spring has strung, Mom is 70, the Maples are Running, the Office is Busy, the Days are Growing, & So Much More.
At Woodland Management Service…
Things have been extremely busy in the office lately, busier than they generally are during this time of year.
It is a miserable time of the year to be in the woods, that melty snow is much more difficult to work in than the cold snow.
Snowshoes sink to the bottom in this snow and the gritty wet nature of it will eat through any waterproofing on your boots, requiring frequent sock changes. The veteran foresters know to bring extra dry clothing on nice days like today but the younger ones still need a few wet cold days to learn this.
Mom…
One of the rites of spring around here is Mom’s birthday, happening every year just after the arrival of spring.
I thought about calling mom early this morning before the day heated up but thought she may be asleep at 4 am, so I put it off, but the day was a blur. Then I fell asleep during dinner, waking up at 10:30, a little late to call mom but better late than not at all.
Mom was a little groggy but happy for her birthday wishes.
It was a special birthday not just because with her cancer, you never know which one will be the last, but because she reached a milestone today at 70 years.
It was a great visit, with plans being made for her upcoming trip to Wisconsin to visit a few doctors, some kids and grandchildren.
Out in the woods the Maples are running…
Though we don’t appreciate the melting snow, many of our clients do since this weather pattern of warm days and cold nights stimulates the Maples to send streams of sugar filled sap up from the roots to feed new growth of twigs and leaves.
Our clients drill holes in the maples, insert a spigot and collect a little of this life promoting elixir to share with others as a natural sweetener for all sorts of treats.
The days are growing…
Though I enjoy winter with dry snow, frozen lakes and rivers, ice roads, and all of the extra productivity these factors allow, I do not enjoy the shorter days.
So one of the things that I celebrate during this time of year is the ever increasing length of days and that extra hour in the afternoons that we gained last week has led to a lot of smiles around here.
More things to celebrate as spring progresses…
In a few weeks we will be celebrating one of my favorite times with Easter and the great importance of this occasion.
As the snow melts the young pines will show up like little green lights in the dry brown grass allowing us to see the results of last year’s natural and artificial plantings.
The trees will be breaking buds over the next few months showing the promise of a new year with more growth.
And finally, as the snows melt and the spring rains come, the rivers will be full, just begging me to dig out my canoe for a delightful trip down one of our scenic rivers.
