As rare as it is, every so often we hear the tragic news of a Realtor being killed when showing a home to a complete stranger.  Now that my wife Stephanie has joined my practice, I can't help but suddenly feeling thrust into safety issues.  As a 6 foot tall big guy, I don't normally think of safety issues except when showing homes in high crimes areas, which of course I like to avoid!  However, as my business is growing, and I bring on more staff, I will have to take this matter more seriously than when thinking of just myself.

The National Association of Realtors, or NAR normally holds a Realtor safety week in the late summer, but in light of the recent killing of a 71-year-old real estate agent in Jefferson, Wisconsin, I would not be surprised if they move it up to sooner in the year.  Ann B. Nelson, of RE/MAX Community Realty, was killed after meeting a man at a vacant property.

Ann B Nelson

Rest in Peace, Ann, I am sorry you had to suffer at the hands of a mad-man, and one, who like most repeat offenders, probably should not have been free on the streets in the first place.

From his past: (The complaint says Hole was imprisoned in the Stateville Correctional Center in Joliet, Ill., from July 11, 1997, to Jan. 13, 2006, for attempting to rape and then stabbing a woman in Chicago Ridge.) Nice guy, huh?

Chris - that is a tragedy, hard to understand.  A nice tribute to Ann.  Be careful out there.

How terrible.  It was very kind of you Chris to post this in rembrance of Ann.  Such an unnecessary tragedy.  What a spineless coward attacking an old woman.  Disgusting!

Condolences and my deepest sympathies to Ann's loved ones and family.

I have to agree... obviously her death is a tragedy at any age, but the fact that she was a grandmother of 16 makes you wonder what coward this guy was...his name is appropriate, "Hole."  It should be where he spends the rest of his life....

Why they let him out of the hole anyway? Soi that he could go and commit a crime, and now they will have waht to charge him with?

This is a tragedy.  Unfortunately, it is not as uncommon as you might think.  Over 200 Realtors were killed in less than a 20-year period:

This is very sad..... We all tend to let down our guard. We need to always think safty as we are always meeting people we have no clue what walk of life they come from or what their true intentions are.  If you feel uncomfortable either ask someone to go with you or find a reason not to go show the house.

Thanks for the reminder of Realtor Safety !

Christopher,

You did your peers a great service here.

If it's seen as a memorial to Ann, you also did a very nice thing.

Hi Chris,

Oh my, I didn't hear about this poor lady. We had an attack a couple of weeks ago in SoCal, fortunately this lady did survive. We just can't ever be too careful.

It breaks my heart.  You know, one would think that at some age you would no longer have to worry about this kind of stuff.  Thanks for a tribute to a lovely lady who loved real estate.

This is awful news.  Let this be a warning to everyone....men and women alike.  If something feels wrong, trust your gut.  And even if it feels safe, make sure you follow simple safety guidelines to keep you out of harms way.

I will have to post a blog entry about the time I literally wanted to run out of a home...the owner didn't like one of my questions and was screaming at me, literally!
