Is Al Gore and the Green movement just hot air??

By

You've gotta love Al Gore and his crowd.  Their still screaming to the world that we're using up our earth's resources, and we're doomed to be cooked in our own juices.  But a number of these same avowed carbon footprint advocates are themselves glorified abusers of everything they claim is wrong with America.

But now there are scientists...yes...die in the wool, REAL scientists, that are not paid by the Petroleum industry, who are now claiming that Al and his crowd are full of hot air.  First there was a Russian astro-physicist that suggested the sun is responsible for global warming or cooling and not green house gases.  Now there are more like this scientist in Texas, Baliunas article, who suggests the sun has much more of an effect then your carbon footprint!

Ok..that's one article, then do your own research or read the following article from down under...Australian science article .  I guess this scientist is also part of some global petroleum conspiracy to warm the planet.

I know it's not politically correct to claim this green house hysteria is all bunk, but in reality there is a HUGE political agenda that is pushing the global warming agenda.  They were the same group which pushed the Anti-nuke hysteria in the 1980's, and they will find other causes to push when everyone realizes they were scammed with this global warming bilge.

What makes me sick is how real estate professionals in all phases of our industry are joining this colophany of misinformation.  Some of these purveyors of this biased science are in reality good people, but whom have spent little time educating themselves in regards to the reality of global warming.  Then there are the true believers, whom no matter how many fact's you present them, they'll still deny it until a glacier slides into their backyard.  But then there are the real slick marketers, who care little about mother earth, but are only interested in one type of green...yep..your money.

Now for those whom think I'm being thick headed, harsh, cruel, or irresponsible, I want you to understand this one fact.  There is nothing wrong with conservation, taking care of the environment, being nice to animals, plants, and fellow human beings.  Who wants to drink polluted water?  Or tropical forests destroyed, or people suffer in typhoons, hurricanes or other disasters.  But let's not lie to ourselves and shut off our brains to the fact that we simply understand very little when it comes to this big planet we live upon.  And for those whom are attempting to cash in on this new religion of global warming...SHAME ON YOU!!

Mr. Utah - here is one "eoc-nut" that is commenting.... if you want to bury your head in the sand about the environmental changes occuring around us - go right ahead.  The majority of the world's leading scientist's in this arena agree not only do we have a CO2 problem but it is escalting faster than originally calculated.  And if you want to ignore that - ok... Perhaps gas at the pump for $5 and up will prompt you to take some action...

We have all abused this planet... and quite frankly I don't think we have a clue how to live on it without abusing it.  That doesn't mean we can't strive to walk more lightly while we try to figure it out.

Karl,

I have lived in Florida most of my life and I can say that I have seen significant changes to climate and environment over the past 45 years. The mackerel and bluefish that was abundant in our Bay are no longer there. I've lived through many hurricanes including Andrew, but I find the storms are becoming stronger and more prevalent. Lake Okeechobee shown below reached its lowest level ever this past year... we still have water controls, because they expect this summer to worse than the last.

About three years ago I was contemplating buying some land on Lake Lanier near Atlanta. Some of the waterfront properties I was considering are now inland as a result of their great drought.[2008] Lake Lanier @ Bolling Mill Park (ESE)

I have also observed some satellite photography of the North and South Poles and there is real evidence that the ice is disappearing. I think most people acknowledge that the climate is changing and the changes are occurring faster than expected. Imagine three years ago I was looking at this lake as a great place to retire and now that lake is drying up--that is fast.

Many of us who observe these changes and many scientist believe the world is getting warmer. This year in South Florida we broke several records for the warmest winter in record. They estimated this winter was about 10 degrees warmer than normal. So it is getting warmer; the only question is who's causing it? Personally I don't care if it is cyclical or caused by my neighbors SUV or my old AC or the many hot incandescent lights in the homes we sell.

For me it is very simple... if I can leave the world better than I found it and save money in the process - why would I not change? In the past two years our family has done the following:

  • Changed all the light bulbs in our house. That lowered our lighting cost by 75%.
  • Changed one car from a 22 MPG conventional to a 35MPG Hybrid. That gave us $1500 tax rebate and at todays prices we are saving about $800/year in gas. It also puts out a fractioin of the Co2 of my old car.
  • We are in the process of remodeling our house. I am increasing the insulation and installing high efficiency AC. That is going to save us about 30% of our total electric bill or about $1200/yr. By the way we will also get a rebate from the power company for the insulation and high efficiency AC.
  • We are re-using many materials that would have normally been discarded in a remodeling and recycling or donating to Habitat to Humanity my old kitchen equipment. A saving for me and others.
  • I am considering installing some solar panels. That will also save on electricity and get a government rebate.
  • We are changing from the old tank water heaters to tank-less gas water heaters. We will get $300 government rebate and reduce our electric bill by another $50/month or save another $600.

None of these changes we making are perfect or without side effects. However while we'll be saving money and hopefully improving the environment, there is a bigger reason for making these and other changes. I have a son in the military and I don't believe he should be risking his life so I can drive around in a big SUV or waste electricity.

I am hoping in a few years to be able tell Chavez and all the other oil czars to take their oil and ... That way our men and women in uniform can leave that forsaken desert and leave those folks to solve their own problems. God knows we have enough problems to solve at home. This whole issue global warming and conservation has nothing to do with Al Gore and all to do with our children and grandchildren's future.

Eva and Carlos - PLEASE do your research. You are simply incorrect. The planet has been COOLING since 1999. Of the 160,000 glaciers on the planet about a third are unchanged; a third are decreasing and a third are getting BIGGER. CO2 FOLLOWS warming, not the other way round. Al Gore simply LIED about that. There is 900,000 years of climate evidence to back this up. Not a misprint - 900,000 years. The evidence is taken from ice core drilling.

2007 was the coldest year on the planet in the last 100 years - not the hottest which Al Gore promised us.

Finally the document that everyone bases this whole "most of the world's scientists agree" argument on is a fabrication. The Full Report of the ICCC (International Committee on Climate Change) is about 800 pages long. It states everything I have just stated above. POLITICIANS from the UN decided to "summarise" it to around five pages (yes - 800 down to 5) and the summary concluded that global warming is real and man made it. LARGE numbers of the scientists involved went crazy! They DEMANDED the UN removed their names from the summary. Some even threatened legal action, but the UN would not back down - and really - who has the time or money to sue the UN?

I could go on and on and on and on.

Simon,

Let's assume everyone is wrong and global warming is just a big hoax. Why is it wrong to pollute less; produce less Co2 and save our natural resources? By the way, all that can be done while saving money. Is there anything wrong with that logic? Imagine to have a society that's healthier, cleaner and possibly wealthier-- what a concept?

Even if Global Warming is a hoax, it is still in our best interest to change our ways to reduce our energy consumption and eliminate pollution. As we debate there are two giants that are becoming more like us every day -- China and India. They are using the US as their model. Many of our architects are designing their buildings; many of our builders are building their cities. They are buying cars and abandoning their bicycles and push carts as their economies grow.

Imagine what is going to happen when all those people are wasting their energy and polluting just like us. We are getting a little preview in Beijing at the Olimpics this year. Then on the other side of the world the Brazilians are clearing the Amazon to plant more sugar cane to keep up with the demand for Ethanol.

I believe our world's environmental problems are just beginning. All we can do is hopefully create another economic model based on hydrogen, sun, wind and other renewable energy sources that are cleaner and safer. If we do it fast enough, and I believe we can, the world will have a chance. But until we get there we must learn to conserve.

Carlos - this month 550 of the top scientists from around the world met in New York City at the 2008 International Conference on Climate Change. I had one of them on my radio show. He said that if you really want to waste your time, then try getting power from wind. He also explained that it takes a gallon of gas to make a gallon of ethanol. The only "green" connected with the so called envrionmental causes are DOLLARS my friend. Fortunes are being made while the public is simply conned.

As I just explained, Co2 FOLLOWS warming, not the other way round. We have hightened Co2 right now because we are COOLING. Oh and at the same time the warming was taking place here - between about 1978 and 1998 - similar warming was taking place on Mars, Jupiter and Neptune. Amazingly this coincided with INCREASED sun spot activity. Right now there is very low sun spot activity and low and behold, the earth is cooling. I wonder if there is a connection?

Simon,

You sound like a very smart man, yet you take the opinion of one person to reach a conclusion? Many countries have been using wind as a source of energy for centuries--Holland first comes to mind. I was last year in Costa Rica and saw wind farms and geothermal plants that provide them with cheap electric power. When I was in Japan I saw wind generators along their coast that also seems to be doing a good job generating power. Even in our west coast we are now using wind generation to provide electricity. Granted it does not work everywhere and today it may be more expensive than fosil fuel generated power. However the price of fosil fuel continues to rise and it may run dry some day - the wind is going to be around for a while and will get cheaper.

I understant your point about Co2, however the level is much higher than its ever been. What caused this spike that is the highest ever recorded? The world has never experieced such a spike - what will happen as a result of such a spike in the Co2 level?

I understand your point and you are obviously informed about the topic. However, it still does not make sense to maintain the status quo. In the mid 1970's when we went throught the Oil Embargo, our nation set on a quest for alternative energy systems. The amount of research on solar, wind, geothermal and other sources of renewable energies was great.

Most of the emerging companies that were developing these systems were bought out by our oil companies and put to sleep. Curiously many of the solar panel companies today are Shell, Exxon, etc. While the US has been producing a majority of these systems the majority are being installed in Japan and now Germany. By the way Brazil set out to free themselves from their dependence on oil and 30 years later, they are free. Thirty years later and we are back again being blackmailed by oil.

Yes, those companies that are developing alternative energy systems are doing it for the mighty dollar $ (today not so mighty). Is that worse than sending $675B a year (and increasing) to nations that use our money against us? Is it better to spend our moneys finding alternative energy systems or to spend it protecting oil fields in other countries?

Regardless of the debate on Global Warming, our focus as a nation should be first on conservation and secondly on developing alternative renewable energy systems. Everyone can start conserving today and through our purchasing power and investments help achieve the second in less than five years. Don't you agree?

Carlos - I am not taking the opinion of one man. This was a conference of 550 of the top climatologists on the planet right in New York City.

Secondly - the level of Co2 is NOT the highest ever recorded. Not even close. As I said, 900,000 years of records. When volcanoes were erupting on a daily basis, the Co2 was much higher than it is now.

Finally - yes we need to free ourselves from Arab oil. Check out my blog - The answer to Arab oil??

Simon here is your quote; "I had one of them on my radio show. He said that if you really want to waste your time, then try getting power from wind. He also explained that it takes a gallon of gas to make a gallon of ethanol."

It sounds to me like there were 550 attending the meeting, but you are quoting one who was on your radio show. To me that sound like you are listening to one person. But be as it may, this is topic that will be debated by greater minds than ours.

I still say the same. WE THE PEOPLE NEED TO FOCUS ON CONSERVATION. OUR INDUSTRY AND GOVERNMENT NEEDS TO FOCUS ON PROVIDING US WITH ALTERNATIVE RENEWABLE SOURCES OF ENERGY AND SYSTEMS. WE ON THE OTHER HAND NEED TO SUPPORT AND ENCOURAGE THAT CHANGE THROUGH OUR BUYING POWER.

This past year I bought a Hybrid - it was not the best solution, but I hope it send a message to industry that I am willing to invest my money on new technology. Our next vehicle may be a bio-diesel hybrid when they start selling those or NEV. I believe my buying power and that of others will change industry and get us away from our dependence on fossil fuels. It may also result in a better environment.

Carlos and Ruiz, nice debate and though I tend to side with Simon , I don't see why we can't conserve more in our country like Carlos suggests in his last response.  Bottom line, we are only paying too much for gas because of our own stupidity.  If congress hadn't backed down to  these Sierra club nuts, and we could actually drill off our own coast in the Gulf, and we could drill in Anwar, we'd probably be paying much less at the pump.  Furthermore there could be more oil refinery's, more nuclear reactors, and more attention paid to developing alternative energy sources.

But we're now dealt a hand that makes it important to find solutions quickly to the impending energy crisis with the Arab world.  WE can no longer just sit on the sideline and allow dictators like Chavez and other third world oil mavericks to dictate our foreign policy.  We need to develop our resources, find alternative energy sources, and find way's not to cripple our economy from wacko environmental policies.

I like clean water and air as much as the next person, and most liberal wacko's don't realize this, but most Republicans agree with me on this issue.  We just don't believe in reacting to hysterical science and media bias in regards to global warming.  We believe that the threat is much overstated for obvious political agenda's, and that the truth will eventually end this stupid debate about global warming.

But I think Carlos is correct, we cannot put our heads in the sand, but neither should we react with a "knee jerk" reaction, because some liberally funded science professors, who are desperately procuring favor with their alumni, university and peer groups.

You know I was chatting to a scientist today. He told me that he knew someone who had applied for a grant to study the sexual practices of squirrels - for what reason I do not know. Anyway, he was turned down. One year later he applied again. The title of this research was "A study on the effects of global warming on the sexual practices of squirrels". He got his grant.

Great post Karl!  Besides that giant ball of fire in the sky that is constantly changing there is another factor that can cause the temps to be off.

Lets look at the way temperatures were measured in 1900-1970, mercury filled glass, if as we are told by the enviro-wackos the temp has gone up .5 degrees, that is a measurement you were not able to determine by that type of measuring device over those 70 years or so.

There is also human error and manufacturing defects because these devices were not calibrated after they left the factory.

One final factor nobody mentions that has to do with human error is paraflux.  If the reader was looking at a angle or from below or above the device the measurement will be off.

So as I see it there is no way to compare readings prior to 1970 to post 1970 with digital devices.

That is one small part of it, I still have not figured out how my lawn mower caused the earth to warm up after the ice age???

This image from March 6, 2008, released by the British Antarctic Survey, shows part of the Wilkins Ice Shelf on the Southwest Antarctic Peninsula as it began to break apart. The ice shelf, about seven times the size of Manhattan began collapsing on Feb. 28, putting an even greater portion of glacial ice at risk, scientists said Tuesday.

Even as we debate the topic of Global Warming, "another big chunk of Antarctic ice about seven times the size of Manhattan suddenly collapsed, putting an even greater portion of glacial ice at risk, scientists said Tuesday" according to an article by AP Science Writer Beth Borenstein. This chunk of ice started breaking apart on February 28, 2008.

Scientists said they are not concerned about a rise in sea level from the latest event, but say it's a sign of worsening global warming.

Such occurrences are "more indicative of a tipping point or trigger in the climate system," said Sarah Das, a scientist at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute. "These are things that are not re-forming," Das said. "So once they're gone, they're gone."

"Much of the continent is not warming and some parts are even cooling, Vaughan said. However, the western peninsula, which includes the Wilkins ice shelf, juts out into the ocean and is warming. This is the part of the continent where scientists are most concern about ice-melt triggering sea level rise."

While reversing Global Warming is good cause and there is enough evidence to be concerned, the reason I am making big changes in our life styles is because I want our country to be independent from fossil fuels. I also have a son in the military and I don't want him to have to risk his life to protect distant oil fields. Also we are sending $675B to OPEC nations that can be better spent in support our own economy and the value of the US dollar. There are many reasons to change--Global Warming is just one.
