The town of Scotch Plains was founded in 1684 the first settlers were Scottish immigrants who cleared the land and built a community, initially called Scotsplain.

The battle of Short Hills was fought in this area in 1777 during the Revolutionary War.

Today the town of Scotch Plains' population is 23,113 with a land mass of 9.1 square miles. That's a population density of 2,545 people per square mile.

There are 320 teachers for 4,811 students. The student to teacher ratio is 15 to 1 and the student to librarian ratio is 534 to 1. Ninety-two percent of the residents are high school graduates and 55.8% are college graduates.

The average age is 38.5. The median income is $85,182. The average income for households with children is $138,675. Sixty five and a half percent of the residents are married and 36.3% of the residents have children.

The township also has 15 houses of worship.

William, I a learning about New Jersey town by town. The mariage rate in Scotch Plain seem to be above average.  By the way how much of the income has to be allotted for mortgage on the average house?

Thanks for stopping by. In answer to your question it varies from town to town. However, based upon Scotch Plains median income and a mortgage of $300,000 with average taxes of $5,600, plus hazard insurance., your payment would be approximately 28.76% of of your gross or $2041 monthly.
