As Margaret Rome shares below, if you are a boomer or senior, living in a home you love, with grand aging in place options, that may be the best option for you for the time being. Some grand food for thought for so many!

Aging In Place May Be The Option

Counseling is a big part when working with Seniors. You often have family members making decisions. Grown children thinking it is best for Mom or Dad to be in condo or adult community. Sometimes they are right but sometimes it is not the right answer. I have seen couples sell their homes at the urging of others...only to reverse the situation and try to come back home. It is a huge challenge moving once must less twice. And way too exhausting for people much younger.

I have been known to talk people out of selling their home. Or at least have them think about it for awhile.

And these situations may take longer, need more explanation and require patience.  A senior needs to know that the option exists to stay and age in place.

It's not about getting the listing. It is about doing what's right for the property owner. Over the year I have received calls from seniors who wanted to see one of my condo listings that  sound so good.  They know I will pick then up and take them to see anything.

Aging in place

But I  have been to their home which is perfect for aging in place. It is a rancher with easy access to the driveway from the kitchen and no steps, totally accessible and a real beauty. It is in pristine condition and I could have a buyer for it in a minute.

Each time we talk she asks my opinion and I freely give my advice.

Stay where you are. You love your home, it is paid for and it is very convenient. If and when the time comes and more help is needed, you have options.  Being able to afford  in home care and remain in the home, that both dearly love, is a choice.

Kaye, thank you for reblogging M's post.  She is right on.  I think many a parent has been convinced by their well-meaning children to make a move that is not right for them.

This is great advice, Kaye. Moving can be stressful, and if senior people have all the ease of living in their home, why move?!

I agree Sonja. Many of us want to take such good care of our elderly parents, but sometimes the best care is maintaining comfortably.

So true Steffy - plus they are often near friends and neighbors who can help them and be good company. Once they move, it can often be much harder for them to make new friends.

Wise words, Clay. It's definitely vital to make a priority comparison chart to help you decided which is the best option for you and your loved ones.

Thanks so much, Margaret. And thanks for writing such a grand article and allowing it to be shared

Absolutely, Judi. My parents made the decision but waited as long as they could - until his Parkinson's and her hip both "said" - time for extra support. Then they moved near me and I was so glad.  But I was also happy they were able to stay in their beloved Hawaii as long as they did - especially since the climate was such a help for my dad!

It is a highly personal decision, and will be different for different families, based on what is going on health & financial wise.
