There's a hole in his head- Red Feather Lakes Colorado

By
Real Estate Agent with United Country Ponderosa Realty, Red Feather Lakes, Colorado

Bull moose drop their antlers in winter.

Look where the antler used to be, it looks like there’s a hole in his head!

moose in Red Feather Lakes Mary Douglas Ponderosa Realty

If I were that moose, I might be thinking, “I need this real estate agent taking my photo like I need (another) hole in my head!”

Or – “I need another car blocking my way like I need another hole in my head!”

Or maybe he would be thinking- “come back in the summer when I don’t have a hole in my head!”

One of the great things about living in the areas surrounding Red Feather is the wildlife.  Being able to see them every day shows us a natural, peaceful order of things- far removed from the hustle of a city, any worries about missing planes, landslides, contracts, emails... etc.

I never tire of seeing the wildlife. Deer, moose, elk, and birds that sing or soar, fox, coyote, bear, mountain lion, little squirrels, rabbits and chipmunks- they all capture my attention and even if just for a second, my thoughts turn to a whisper and they take my breath away.  They are wild and carefree.

In spite of the “hole in his head”, this guy seemed OK with the brief photo shoot and interruption of his carefree day.

Gary, I had never seen anything like that before either- kind of looks painful!  I would love to see buffalo, we used to have one (1) at the top of our hill...but he disappeared.  He was more of a pet I think. Thanks for stopping by Gary.

Hi Sharon, you do not need anymore headaches- that's for sure! Well, at least you don't have a hole in your head like Mr. Moose here :-)

That's a great picture, Mary. I was just in the CO Springs area for a long weekend. We had snow. Did you get any?

Moose are interesting creatures.  My sister lived in Alaska in the 1960s when they had the earthquake up there.  She talks about standing in the doorway of her kitchen, and watching a moose butting a tree because it was moving.

I need another day like yesterday, like I need a hole in my head!

Thanks Debbie, we did get snow- it snowed all day Saturday... tiny little flakes that disappeared mid-day Sunday. Hope you had a great time in the Springs!

Hi Myrl, they are interesting and unpredictable. I can picture the moose and tree that you described! Sorry about yesterday I hope today was much better!

I need to hear another political campaign ad like I need a hole in my head!:-)

That is a fantastic picture but maybe he is happy that his head is not holding up those heavy antlers.

Mary - I think I've figured it out with that moose.  He has a gender identity issue, so he shed his horns because he wants to be a girl

I had no idea that a moose loses his horns. Without his horns, he doesn't look like a moose, and I probably would not recognize one if I saw it wandering alone down the road, ha, ha , ha, like I'm gonna see a moose in Sacramento.

Kristin, you have point- maybe he is happy without his big beautiful rack!

Hi Dorie, I'm glad your brother had a great time skiing here!  The moose seem to like it here too LOL!

Oh Myrl, that is just too funny.

Hi Jeffrey- it does look strange you're right

Hi Elizabeth, all deer, elk and moose shed their antlers every year.  After I learned that, the antler chandeliers didn't bother me nearly as much :-)

Hi Mary, Hole or not, that is a great photo. The hair on this guy is really thick. Looking at his face I sure do better understand the character of Bullwinkle.

I did not know that, Mary.  How long does it take to grow a pair of antlers?   Do they just sprout?

Hi William, thanks. You're right, he still has his heavy winter coat on- no goofy smile like Bullwinkle though

Hi Jane,  yes, they just sprout! :-) their new antlers will start growing in spring and they grow fairly quickly- he'll have a full rack again by fall...then the cycle starts over again...

Mary what a beautiful photo.  On a visit to Vermont I was hoping to see a moose but that did not happen.

You truly live in a beautiful area, a place to be one with nature.

Hi Jennifer, I have seen more moose this past year than ever before---so I guess you can go where they are and never see them:-(  hopefully on your next trip to Vermont they will show up!

Joan, I can say, that I have never seen them with "a hole in their head" either!  I bet by now he has little velvet "sprouts" already coming out of his head.

Have a great weekend!
