Calvert County Lighthouses

Drum Point Lighthouse is one of just two Calvert County Lighthouses still in existence and open to the public in Southern Maryland.

Well before the internet was a blip on the radar, Calvert County lighthouses helped guide sailors back into port.  Navigating the rocky inlets of Southern Maryland could be a tricky business, especially during stormy weather or in the dark of night.  The powerful lamp at the top of each lighthouse would pulse in a particular rhythm to let a ship's captain know which port they were sailing into.  Today, many of these lighthouses are out of commission, with very few still in use.  If you love these beautiful structures, Southern Maryland has two Calvert County lighthouses you may want to visit: Cove Point Light Station and Drum Point Lighthouse.

Search the MLS to find your next Southern Maryland home

Cove Point Light Station (3500 Lighthouse Blvd, Lusby) - Welcome to the oldest continuously working lighthouse in the entire state.  Cove Point Light Station sits on prime Southern Maryland real estate in Lusby.  One of the keeper's homes was completely restored to its former glory just a couple of years ago.  It is now utilized as a high end vacation rental as well as for special events.  It is only open seasonally (1pm-4pm daily from June to August and only on weekends/holidays in May and September).  The grounds are only partially accessible for wheelchairs, with the site itself being listed on the National Register of Historic Places.  Contact the light station at (410) 326-2042 for more information.

Drum Point Lighthouse (Calvert Marine Museum, 14200 Solomons Island Rd, Solomons) - Originally built in 1883 at Drum Point to indicate the Patuxent River entrance for seafaring vessels returning home, Drum Point Lighthouse is one of only three remaining screwpile cottage-type lighthouses left in existence in Southern Maryland.  It is available for viewing from 10am to 5pm every day.

Like snowflakes, no two lighthouses are alike.  Take a step back through the history of Southern Maryland.  Visit one of the Calvert County lighthouses when you get the chance.  You will be amazed at what could be accomplished before our modern technology took over.

There was a lovely documentary about Maryland's lighthouses on our PBS channel just a week or two ago.  In the film they highlighted several beautiful lighthouses, including this one. It is truly a fantastic piece of history and a place I'm definitely checking out next time I'm downstate.
