Understanding the LGBT Nicht

I just read a great article in the March/April 2014 Realtor Magazine titled How to reach out to gay couples: Understanding the LGBT Nicht.

I live in Rhode Island, which is one of the 17 states that recognize same-sex marriages along with the federal government.  Personally, I have never though of same-sex couples as being any different when it comes to buying or selling homes then heterosexual couples. All couples want the same thing usually. A good location, a home in good condition, and a good price to value on that home. Some place safe for their kids, and a short commute to work or school.

As a Realtor,  Article 10 of National Association of Realtors Code of Ethics prohibits Realtor's from discriminating based on sexual orientation/gender identity. Even through the federal Fair Housing Act doesn't include sexual orientation as a protected class, more and more states and municipalities are offering protection. It's important to my business as a Realtor to keep up on changing laws nationally as well as locally and how it affects my clients.

The article talked about when marketing to clients be gender or sexual orientation neutral. It's ok to say you are LGBT friendly, or you specialize in first time home buyers, or Seniors etc. Just don't exclude particular groups. When describing properties, a double sink vanity is great, his and her sinks..not so much.

We also owe it to our clients to provide equally exceptional service regardless of any biases. By reading and writing about this article it has helped me understand the LGBT Nicht better.

Heidi - Good post, I am like you and believe people want the same things with very minor differences.

I've heard about the his/hers closets and sinks being LGBT unfriendly.  It's going to be a hard habit to break, but it makes perfect sense.

It was such an easy transition for me to be not be gender specific.  Having a gay son made my behavior almost instantly change.  I like to come across the same non discriminating way I would like everyone to treat our son.

Good points Heidi. We have to chose our words carefully with any segment of the market.
