It is that time of year when taxes are one everyone's minds. The scammers know this and prey on our vulnerabilities. Don't be duped.

Read about this new scam and tell others what to look out for too.

There is a new wave of phone scams going around the Winchester, VA area, and I'm sure there are many other communities experiencing the same thing. The scam involves callers who are very convincing as IRS agents.

The callers call an unsuspecting resident explaining that they have an anomaly on a previous year's tax return. The anomaly has generated thousands of dollars in penalties and interest, and there is the potential of incarceration without a quick resolution.

They will give the victim an opportunity to send a Western Union money order to the company representing the IRS to clear the debt before legal action takes place. Sadly, in Winchester and beyond, they have already managed to scam their victims of millions of dollars.

One rule of thumb to remember, the IRS will not call you and demand money. You will always received written correspondence from them. They will encourage you to call them in the written correspondence, but they will not call you and demand money. Be careful out there because the world of dishonest money scammers is alive and well.

I have heard a similar scam scare with threats of incarceration from the DEA. These people are scum and any problems you would not be notified by phone, but by mail. Anything IRS of course scares everyone. Great re-blog Debbie.
