Hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla), Beautiful Flowers for Garden

Hydrangea is a common name, and hydrangea macrophylla is the scientific name. It is a green bush with beautiful flowers in round shapes, which have attractive colors of pink, blue or white for your garden. It grows wild along the rivers of China and Japan.

Hydrangea – Watering and Feeding

Hydrangea   requires partial shade and will grow well in well drained and moist soil. You may plant it in a pot and bring into the house during the winter season, because it is not hardy. They need moisture during the dry seasons.   Also water the plant daily after the first flower buds have appeared. Too little water will makes the leaves wilt and become curried and brown at the edge

Beautiful flowers of hydrangea

The color of the flowers depends on the amount of acid in the soil. Basically they have white flowers, however more acidic soil it will produce bluer flowers and less acidic (alkaline) soil will produce a lighter shade of blue or pink. It starts blooming in March and continues right through September.  The scent is fresh and not very strong.

Hydrangea is a very attractive and decorative plant for your garden. The round flowers preserve they last long after cutting. It may be used for wedding bouquets, and/or dried flowers arrangements.

Hydrangea – Cutting and Care

Shape hydrangea plants by pruning after flowering.  Propagate from the cutting.  It is salt tolerant if you live near the beach.

Mildew can be seen as a white powder on the leaves. Remove the affected leaves and treat with mildicide.  Aphids often attack new tender leaves, and can be treated by spraying a mixture of dish liquid with water and on it.

Kwee - The hydrangea is my favorite flower. I just planted a hydrangea in my yard after the birth of my son Vincent almost two years ago. I am so excited to see what color the blooms will be (as this is based on the acidity of the soil ...i think. They were blue in the container when I got the plant from a friend.
