Our community said goodbye to a hero yesterday, as fallen Windermere Police Officer Robert "Robbie" German was laid to rest on a cool, overcast Central Florida day.

Attending the service yesterday was somewhat bittersweet.  The general public has relatively few opportunities to express our appreciation for our law enforcement personnel on a large scale- and I was surely appreciative of the chance to show my appreciation for Officer German's sacrifice.  I always make an effort to shake hands with and thank police officers and deputies whenever I can- as I figure it's the least I can do for them, and also because I'm aware of how others don't quite hold the authorities in such high esteem.

As Officer German's friends and father spoke of him, I kept thinking to myself, "I really wish I'd known that guy"- but I didn't have the chance.

I wasn't shocked by yesterday's outpouring of support for Officer German by any means, mind you- as I knew law enforcement personnel from throughout Florida and beyond were making their way here for the service.  And if anyone may have been surprised, I hope they now know just how strong a Thin Blue Line can be.

May God continue to bless the memory of Officer German and all of our fallen law enforcement officers.  May all of us who didn't know Robbie German join those who did in expressing a common sorrow- knowing he walked the streets and toward things others walked away from for all of us just the same.

Nice gesture of support Dennis.  It is always tough having someone getting killed in the line of duty like that.  Rest In Peace.

Hi, Rob:  Thank you for dropping by, and for your comment.  Our law enforcement community has been much-maligned over the past few years- as you surely know.  A good guy in Bill Lee was run out of Sanford for political correctness' sake.  And hear this, Jerry Demings: one of the best guys you'll ever meet in John Tegg has had the love and respect of every Orange County deputy I've ever spoken with- yet can't win an election due to the racial politics many wish to play.  But make no mistake about it, John Tegg is a deputy's best friend.

That said, my mother has a photo of me being held at a very young age by another sheriff- a guy named Buford Pusser from McNairy County, Tennessee.  Yes, all 6'6" of the Walking Tall sheriff was carrying a little Dennis and still had bandages on his head from having his face re-constructed.

I don't remember that day, of course- but I'd say I've always had an appreciation for law enforcement folks and an acute awareness of the sacrifices they make for us all my life, and it's bound to be owing in part to the legendary Sheriff Pusser.

I'm glad a number of folks have seen the video I've taken and put out there on YouTube thus far (and I have some stuff from last night going up now), and I hope it will foster a bit more respect in all of us.  That's both those of us that have always had a great deal of it- but can never have enough, as well as those who may just be coming to a new-found appreciation for the Thin Blue Line.
