My favorite thing about Spring is Simple..The Smell of a Sweaty Horse.
I love the smell of a sweaty horse in the Spring.
I love grooming them and having buckets full of hair come out as they shed.
I love hearing their groan of satisfaction accompanied by a softness of their eyes as I massage their skin with a rubber brush.
I love the first Spring bath on a warm day, watching months of dirt wash off them.
I love their Spring frolicking when they kick up their heels at the warmer weather.
I love the green shoots of grass coming up in the pasture that they eagerly nose around for, starved for fresh munchies.
I love the fact that they finally get to be in my "backyard", a first for me. I have always had my horses either boarded or kept at a distant site because where I lived did not have the facilities to house them.
We have 37 acres now with a babbling creek running through it, a meadow for grazing and room for a nice big turnout (paddock) and a barn.
Our place is finally ready for my two horses, Rio (my 15 year old Palomino) and Tucker (my 3 year old bay). We have had to board them for years, waiting to buy a place out of town, waiting to build our home, and finally, waiting to build their digs.
The turnout for them is now done (200'x100'pasture) and the barn will be up in a week. The 130' by 66' arena is done so they can get some exercise.
The horse trailers are here and ready for action - trail rides here we come!
My new life rhythm is simple and full.
Sunrise feeding, real estate work from 9-12 and then appointments after that, afternoon workouts, evening feeding.
On days when we don't have clients in town, afternoon trail rides on trails no more than 10 minutes from our house. We are 3 minutes from McCoy Gulch, 7 minutes from the Rainbow Trail which connects to the Continental Divide trail that runs across the United States, and 10 minutes from a trail near Texas Creek. A 2 hour trail ride is easy (that is usually all the time we have) but an 8 hour trail ride is glorious.
Are horse properties calling you like they did me?
Thanks for sharing Paula! I can tell you have great passion when it comes to horses! That's great that you're finally being able to house them on your own location! I've personally have never smelled the sweat of a horse but I'll take it from you that it smells great!
I love the smell of my sweaty mare and getting covered in hair when I groom her. She is almost completely done shedding and looks beautiful. I kept my horses at home for 15 years in Massachusetts. Here in Arizona, I board now. I miss looking out my back window to watch them graze. However, since the summers are so unbearably HOT here in Arizona, I don't miss the barn chores!
Paula-Your title got me. I must confess I have no idea what a sweaty horse smells like. But I do know that your horses must feel loved and well cared for. .
Lori, very cool. Great smell eh? I wish and hope and will do a dance for you to have it happen. If you want that horse in your backyard, it will happen!
Kim, yep love that. And, having been Arizona is the summer I agree about avoiding barn chores in the summer. The stables always had other folks around to ride with which was nice.
