Historical Marker Dedication at Bayport and Eatin' Goober Peas

A dedication ceremony took place today at Bayport Park in Hernando County, Florida, for several historical markers commemorating the history of the area.

Well attended, the event included civil war era music, a recollection of events at Bayport during the Civil War and an overview of the current archaeological efforts at Bayport.

Bayport in Hernando County, Florida, played a critical role in the Civil War as a harbor for confederate troops and was under attack several times by union troops.  It was also here at Bayport, were a band of union troops landed to set out on the Brooksville Raid, an event that is reenacted annually and draws hundreds of civil reenactors and thousands of spectators to the area.

Goober Peas

Do you know what goober peas are?  Apparently, an important part of the confederate soldier's diet, a goober pea is a peanut.  "Eatin' goober peas" was a popular civil war era song and you can hear it in the following video of the dedication event.

When Africans came to America during the 1700's, they brought with them a plant called Nguba - aka, "Peanuts".

The Africans called them Nguba; the Americans changed the pronunciation to "Goober Peas".

Over time, the name was replaced by "Peanuts".

Connie, we had our Brooksville Raid earlier this year already commemorating the 150 year anniversary.  If you think about it, how the world has changed since then!

Toni, thank you.  I think history gives us a special connection to where we live and the places we visit.

Wasn't there a song about eating goober peas? This park reminds me of our fort here in Clarksville with their reenactments.

Hi Debbie R., there is and you can hear parts of it in the video.

Debbie, no, unless you are thinking of Goober from the Andy Griffith show!  :-)  Fred Griffin in comment 4 explained that the term came from Africa (for peanuts) but was spelled differently, Americans made it into their own word according to pronounciation.
