A growth opportunity for the senior housing industry?

According to Joseph F. Coughlin, the Director of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology M.I.T. AgeLab (http://agelab.mit.edu), the

"disruptive demographics of an aging society offers a growth opportunity for the senior housing industry." (March, 2014)

And, as we have been considering
here in Asheville, NC., there are also many promising ways that can  enable older adults to remain in a lifelong home rather than move.
(aging-in-Palace). But what are the implications for "boomers" and older adults and real estate professionals who serve this niche?

Aging-in-place technologies and the real estate market

Of course, there are any number of  available technologies relevant to a discussion of aging-in-place and what that could mean for real estate professionals and our clients.

Coughlin says, " The convergence of old age and new technology will make the future of aging very different than our parent’s old age. Devices and systems that seek to manage our health are becoming ubiquitous. These include sensors throughout the home, the Internet-of-Things where appliances and the environments communicate with each other and to outside service providers."

A threat or an intriguing possibility?

Is technology a threat or an opportunity for the senior housing industry? Here in Asheville, we have some great ideas for sustainable excellence that work for all of us- regardless of age or physical ability. How about in your neighborhoods? The answer?
What do you think?

The baby boomers have been a problem in how they effect the society at large.

I'm wondering if it has ever occurred to "boomers" that THEY would be perceived as a problem. Could people look at me and NOT first see a human being?

JaneAnne I think my area is lagging behind; not enough focus on homes for this niche.   I can't tell you how many calls I have received over the years  and I could not help.

I also see another issue, young people left the area to find more affordable communities, so who will be around to take care of the seniors?  I see problems down the road.

Aging in place is a challenge because the senior might own the home but the taxes makes staying in place difficult.

Aging in place with all this new technology may seem feasible, but having the newest technology is often very costly. Given that older people are typically not at their peak income levels, I see that this may be an issue. Only rich old people will be able to enjoy the technology of things until the technology becomes commonplace.
