Calling all architecture buffs -- what type of window is this?

San Francisco is a fascinating city in which to walk. The geography is one factor--hills, staircases, twisty streets--but the architecture is another.

One style of window I see from time to time is this elegant one, which is the entry door to a residential building in the Pacific Heights neighborhood near Fillmore:

Here it is again, the upper windows of the middle building in the Marina district:

Who knows the name of this style?

Lottie Kendall, I think that it is very interesting that you would focus in on this architectural detail. I can see how the California atmosphere could be appealing to residents, as well as those relocating.

Lottie, I do not know the name of the style of window .... but I do recall stopping in my tracks and staring at the very same entry door while out walking in Pacific Heights with my son and grand-dog, Molly.

Will Nesbit, I think an interesting photo study would be to focus on just the window of homes I walk by, or doors, or gates - the variety is endless!

Jon, the architecture is so eclectic here, and likely in your area as well, that it is never boring.

Kathleen, that door just pops out at one, doesn't it?

Will Hamm -- if no one supplies the answer, I'll have to learn it and let everyone one!

Lottie - I love the arched door ways!  They are so much work to create, but-oh-boy they are beautiful and stately.  I wish I knew the name for the windows, but if it were up to me to name them I'd go with "bell" because the top of the window looks like the outline of one.  Loved the photos!

Laura, they really are intricate, aren't they? Quite lovely.

Roy, I like them, too. I saw another good example this evening, on Sacramento Street, across from Grace Cathedral on Nob Hill.

Not sure about the specific name either, but they are just beautiful. I know one thing for sure. I wouldn't want to be spending the money to replace them.

Lottie, I bet a window company would know, and yes these are just beautiful!    I too saw many of these walking around Pacific Heights.

Joe, isn't that the truth? And what about the rounded glass used in some of the bow windows?

John, I'll find the answer soon -- at least, once my income taxes are finished!

Hi Joan - this isn't a common window style, but they are around--saw another example on Sacramento Street, across from Grace Cathedral just the other night.
