Diesel fuel has crossed $4 per gallon...and the only benefit?  Trucks are driving slower.  That really is a good thing.  It's good for us because those hauler trucks are scary on the freeways and it's good for them because they conserve fuel when they drive slower.

Officials say that slowing a trailer rig from 75 mph to 65 mph increases fuel mileage by more than a mile a gallon.  Since most trailer rigs get 10 miles per gallon, that is a significant (10 percent) saving.

My point is we may be saving lives as well...by driving slower.

I saw one just last week that had crossed the median of the freeway, plowed into two cars, and ended up in a giant culvert.

Michael,  Those trucks can be scary on the highway but, in reality, the drivers do an incredibly good job.  I would venture to guess their accident rate is well below the national average.  When they do have an accident, though, it sure can make a mess!
