Addison Pacesetters Learn About Upcoming Community Garage Sale.
Addison Pacesetters (Addison, Texas residents 50+ years of age) meet the first Wednesday of each month at Dunn Bros. on Belt Line Road and learn about the Town of Addison. This month, Tim Hastings, Environmental Health Specialist for the Town, spoke to us. Here are some tidbits from his presentation and the Q & A session that followed:
- Tim is known as our "Garage Sale Guru." He's been involved with the community garage sale in Addison since the spring of 2006.
- The idea of the Addison community garage sales was conceived 14 years ago by former City Manager Ron Whitehead. Because "bandit signs" are not allowed, it was difficult for individual homeowners to draw traffic to garage sales. Only one sign is allowed in the yard, no directional signs anywhere else.
- The first Addison community garage sale was held June 17th, 2001. There was only one sale that year. And it's a little too hot to hold a sale in June.
- In 2001, there were 2 sales and the sales are now held the first Saturday in May and the first Saturday in October.
- Applications to reserve a space at the Addison Community Garage Sale used to go out in the water bills, but are now accessible on the Town of Addison website to be more "green."
- Changes that have been made to the garage sale over the past several years include FREE electronic and computer recycling and on-site shredding for Addison residents (bring your driver's license to verify residency).
- Metrocrest Services and Goodwill will have trucks at the event, so if you don't sell everything and don't want to bring it back home, donate those items and get a receipt for tax purposes.
Next month, the first Wednesday is May 7th. Come join the Addison Pacesetters at Dunn Bros. and learn about the town of Addison. The speakers begin their presentations at 10:30 am. Arrive early and grab a cup of coffee. The Mayor holds court at 10:00 am, so if you have questions about Addison, that's a good time to get answers. See you with the Addison Pacesetters at Dunn Bros.
