So you have decided to put your home on the market but your attic and cellar are packed to the rafters with stuff that you haven’t used for years. So what do you do?  Hold a yard sale to reduce the clutter in your home and get rid of items you don’t want to move and make a few bucks as well.

Here are some helpful tips to ensure that you have a successful yard sale.

Collect all your yard sale items. Be sure to clean off those things that have been gathering dust over the years.

Price items ahead and attach prices with removable stickers. Remember, yard sales are supposed to be bargains, so don’t try to sell anything of significant value this way. . Seasoned yard sale shoppers are prepared to haggle on the price you’re asking. So, you should expect the price you put on your items to be the starting point for any haggling that may happen.

Advertise. There are two ways to generate traffic to your sale: classifieds and posters. Post your yard sale information on your local Craigslist page. Be sure to post in both the event and sale sections and include the date, time and location. Make it easy for everyone to find your sale. You'll want to make lots of easy-to-read signs to direct people to your sale. The typical hours for a yard sale are 8 AM to 2 PM.

Display everything neatly and individually so customers don’t have to dig through boxes. A great way to move sales along and get rid of those items you can't bear to pack up again is to have a "sale" at your yard sale. Prior to the yard sale, make a sign that says "Everything on this table 1/2 price after noon." Put the sign on the table around 11:40 a.m. The people who are shopping might pick up a second item from that table and shop your yard sale a bit longer. Another sale to try at your yard sale is to have a $1 table and make a sign that reads "buy four get one free." It will get people to buy multiples and clean out your yard sale stash that much quicker.

Get enough change, and keep a close eye on your cash. You should have, at the very least, a roll of quarters, a roll of dimes, a roll of nickels, 20 onedollar bills, a few fives, and a couple of tens

If you are selling small, expensive items, make sure you position them close to you and away from the street. Keep an eye on them as much as you can.  Also make sure your money is secure.

Use old plastic bags, boxes and newspaper to package your items. Your yard sale customers will appreciate you for it.

Have a plan for the leftovers. When your yard sale is over, you will have stuff that didn’t sell. Do not bring it back into your house! You don’t need the clutter.  One option is to put a post up offering everything free for whoever hauls it away. Another option is to see if a charity in your area offers a pickup service and schedule it before the yard sale.
