What's being Dug up at Chinsegut Hill in Brooksville, Florida?

Today was Archaeology Day at Chinsegut Hill in Brooksville, Florida and this was another great opportunity to visit this great historical site with it's beautiful Antebellum mansion.

The Chinsegut Hill mansion and its auxiliary buildings have been under restoration for several months now and it was good to see the work progressing in restoring this historical home to it's former glory.

Now another project is under way and that is to research and document all aspects of the rich history of Chinsegut Hill.  The result will be an archaeological and historical landscape study of the site, in part funded by the Florida Office of Historic Preservation.

A team of archaeologists, geologists, and botanists from the Gulf Archaeology Research Institute were present to explain to the visitors all that this study entails.  This was a hands-on day, some volunteers were cleaning artifacts that had been found on the site such as glass, ceramics, and metal pieces.  The study will continue over the next several months and volunteers are encouraged to participate.

It was fascinating to hear the experts explain the significance of certain soil layers and then draw certain conclusions of how people may have lived here in times gone by.  A walking tour of the site and looking at historic landscape plantings while walking under 100 year old oak trees was as informational and educational as it was beautiful.

Silvia, I love it when we as a society try to preserve our history, there is nothing that angers me is there are so many people who just love to Tear Down and start fresh instead of preserving...how fun to have such an archaeological exposure to the community!, Endre

Tony, and Darcy, they are just beginning the archaeology project so I'm sure there will many interesting things to come.

Endre, I agree,  it's amazing what we can learn about an area once we start digging a little deeper, literally!

Conrad, thanks, I learned a few new things that day.

Debbie, I agree.  It's an effort of getting the community involved in its own history.
