This bulletin from CAR, which is in the, "Share It", section of the California Association of Realtor's news bulletin has some very interesting facts:
- The average household uses 174,000 gallons of water each year
- 57% of water usage goes to watering the grass and other landscaping usage
This second bullet point about landscaping usage really surprised me! It makes sense to have desert landscaping to prevent waste of water used only for ornamental use!
Don't forget the retrofit law which states that by January 1, 2017 every residential property that was built prior to 1994 has to have the following:
- Toilets that use no more than 1.6 gallons per flush
- Shower heads with flow rates of no more than 2.5 gallons per minute
- Other interior fixtures that use less than 2.2 gallons per minute
What this means is that if you want to sell your home that was built prior to 1994, (AFTER January 1, 2017), there will be a compliance checklist done prior to selling, much like the water heater strapping and carbon monoxide and smoke detector compliance laws now.
