7 Myths About Real Estate Blogging

By
Real Estate Technology with Real Estate Tomato

The following article is a piece submitted by a (self-proclaimed) dedicated reader of the Real Estate Tomato, Sacramento area Realtor, John Lockwood.

I expect this piece to generate some discussion, so don’t let me down.

And now, John’s piece:

7 Myths About Real Estate Blogging

HydraI've been thinking of submitting an article to the Real Estate Tomato for some time. The Tomato is probably the only real estate blogging related blog that I read regularly. Webmaster Jim Cronin and his frequent contributor, Teresa Boardman, do a really good job of putting up with my somewhat twisted world view, and this tolerance has emboldened me to twist it up into a more full length article form.

I've been blogging for awhile, since the launch of the web site that now accounts for much of my business -- in mid 2003 or thereabouts. To give you an idea: I started out on Radio UserLand, which one might quip is the blogging software equivalent of the Altair or the TRS-80. I haven't been blogging continuously since then; there was at least one gap of a few months.

I've had some successes with my blog, but I dare say almost all of them have been indirect, except the pleasure of meeting a small number of hardy souls who've made bold to befriend me. Lately however the more I read about what others are saying about real estate blogging, the more I feel like my efforts have been something entirely different from what other people are saying about their efforts.

So when I list these myths about real estate blogging, I should do so with an appropriate disclaimer: I believe that my take on what's right and wrong about blogging are pretty are pretty much a minority opinion. So here is a minority opinion, then, on the top myths about real estate blogging.

I am new to AR and find this post and comments very interesting.  I think that like anything, no one thing has all the answers.  However, in just a short time, I have made some important business contacts that I would not have made without such a forum.  I will be interested to see how things develop. To blog or not to blog -- that is the question!

Here's a view, there's a view, everywhere's a point of view, view!  That's why it's called a POINT of view!  The more the merrier...or at least Rowdier!

Idle observation...isn't a tomato a fruit botanically...why do I never get TOMATO?

Everyone has an opinion about everything even an opinion about opinions.

RET...Your blogs are an interesting read whether spoofing or not. That shows me you are an excellent writer. What else do you need to know?

Interesting that you should post this here at AR, but guess it does help get comments.

I like obscurantism.....Start a Group!

Deborah,

Yep, the tomato is a fruit, not a vegetable.  What don't you get about Tomato?

-

Karen,

This is not a spoof.  It was a piece written by John Lockwood, an agent out of Sacramento that enjoys stirring the pot with his minority observations.  I felt that it was very appropriate to post it on AR because of the alternative angle it offers.

Anyone who regularly reads me knows that I would have never composed such a piece personally.  My interest and effort always lie in the development and encouragement of all business blogging.  I offer a platform (soapbox) to those that (1) Ask, (2) Understand my audience, (3) Are passionate, (4) Will write about technology marketing (5) Will deliver regular content.

Funny you mention comments, I rarely get a lively discussion here unless I post something that a guest author has written.  Ironic?

As I said over on the Tomato - I love it when a post holds my attention to the last word - I've ready every one - there and here. Perspective - Awareness - Attitude - Experience

I will be using the contacts I've made on AR this morning to refer a client with three properties - and there is a lot of drivel dribble on AR - I've added my share. We'll see how it works out over time.

What an entertaining way to start off the morning! His post reflects many of my thoughts, but portrays them in such a light that I now laugh at myself. Beyond the humor lies many truths, though. Here was my particular favorite:

Now look: If you were a liar or a crook before you got in the business, neither NAR's Code of Ethics nor your Wordpress installation will redeem you. And if you were an honest person before you got in the business, chances are you'll continue to be one without any special organizational or technological crutches.

RET,

I notice when people post rants they get a lot of comments here on Active Rain.  Kind of like watching the news every day. I do think "you" are a good writer!

Hi Jim - oh just my feeble attempt at some humor at 2:30AM!  The AR "graphics" to submit a comment are always fruits (last night it was "cantaloupe", for this comment it's "persimmon") and it struck me as funny verrry late last night that "tomato" was never an option when I was commenting on your post (of John Lockwood's article)  the Real Eatate Tomato!

Karen,

Thanks so much.
And I know what you mean by rants and comments.  My first real "splash" here on AR back in July was somewhat of a rant, and it got me in some hot rain... but did get me noticed :)

--

Deborah,

I too have never seen the 'Tomato' in the Captcha.  What gives.  I think it's discrimination!

RET - rest assured there's no anti-tomatoism here.  I've gotten "tomato" a few times.  I've also gotten  "carrot"...which I think is a vegetable.

Bryant - that's a really nice blog you've got.

(I get "tomato" all the time, and no, a carrot is not a fruit..) But a kiwi is.
