My First Real Estate Experience - What an ending...

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Godzyk Real Estate Services NH License 033394

Get ready for an exciting journey through MY world of Real Estate. In September of 1985, at the ripe age of 17, I entered college and took a Real Estate class as an elective. My mother was in Real Estate and from a young age I knew Real Estate for me. Just after my 18th Birthday, I took the NH Real Estate test and passed. I showed up ready to work. But NO one in this office or in Real Estate was ready for a young man, all dressed up and no where to go. My mother allowed me to shadow her everywhere to learn the business.

I was great with communicating and that first weekend was given pages after pages of what i came to know as FSBO's "For Sale by Owners" in the local newspaper. I got training by fire told to call everyone in the paper. If you ever called them, you never forget that if you are lucky, you here "click" the unlucky calls end with either yelling or choice words... Not far into my calling an older couple said yes, they needed help and come on over. I wrangled up my partner (my mom) and said lets go get a listing. "It is not that easy" I was told....

We arrived at the home. An older but very neat home. We were met by two of the nicest people who invited us in. There was another man there all dressed in his 3 piece suit and stack of 3 ring binders. We were told we could see the home and then tell them how we thought we could sell their home. They would then decide which agent they would list with.

I followed along taking lots of notes. In that short time the wife told me many stories as we walked through the home. When they moved there, how much they enjoyed raising their family and why they were moving, We sat bat the large table with the home owners and the other agent. The other agent stands up to make his presentation. He stares at me and points, saying "We are Remax Professionals, we Sell mor ehomes than anyone and Real Estate should be handled by professionals, not a kid.

I felt 2 feet tall and was as red as a ripened tomato. The wife turns to me asks "how long have we lived here?", I answered and was correct. She turned to the suit and asked him why they were moving. He did not know and spouted off they wanted a new home, duh. At that time the life lesson I learned is listening skills are much more important in Real Estate than most people know. She asked him to leave and said they would list with me. It was my first listing.

The next day we had our office tour and my mom made me show each agent in our office the home one by one. She corrected me and added tips. She made me learn every nook and cranny in that home. Within days I got a call from the sign. I was to conduct my first showing. The young couple loved the home and wanted to write an offer right on the spot, I was taught how to pre-qualify them on the spot before we would write an offer. Right there on the hood of the car the buyers signed, Within the first two weeks I got my first listing, my first offer and soon first closing. The older couple who owned the home also bought a new 1 story home using me as their buyer agent. Over the life of my Real Estate career they sold 4 homes through me while buying 4 more.

To this day my Real Estate world includes knowing the most important lesson is when to listen and when to speak. I tell it like it is, good or bad. I stick by my clients through each step of the real estate transaction. I treat everyone with respect even though I always wanted to say to that man, who is the professional now?

One of my favorite things is writing each and every day so buyers and Sellers can learn that they do have a choice in Real Estate Agents. Choosing a "GOOD" one sure can make a difference. I leave you with my simple recipe to make your Real Estate Dreams come true.

THE TOP TIPS TO FIND A "GREAT" REAL ESTATE AGENT

 1. LEARN THIS ONE FACT: One should know that All Agents are not created equal and every buyer or seller should take the time to hire the BEST not just the biggest Agent or Company. It is important to Hire the BEST Agent. In NH that could be me.

2. CHOOSE THE RIGHT AGENT: As a Buyer OR Seller in this market you need every advantage you can to get your home sold. It starts with choosing the right agent. a. Ask for a Full time agent whose sole job is to sell homes. b. Ask for a Full service agent who will guide you through each step of the selling process. Discount brokers often equal discount services. c. Ask for a Local agent who knows your neighborhood and is readily available when you need them is a must. Out of town agents can leave you high and dry in your time of need. d. Ask for a well experienced Listing Agent can give you the advantages you need when selling your home. Not all agents are created equal. Choose only the best.

 3. HOME BUYERS SHOULD START BY:  Getting a FREE PRE-QUALIFICATION with a local and trusted lender. They will look at your credit and financial picture and let you know what type of mortgage you may qualify for and what your interest rate and monthly payment may be.

4. HOME SELLERS SHOULD START BYGetting a FREE MARKET ANALYSIS. Learn what your property is worth in today's market along with how ling it may take to sell. If you are ready to sell now, learn what you should ask for it. How much offers may come in at and what the approximate selling price should be. NH Home owners should contact me now.

IN SUMMARY the key to having a successful purchase or sale can increase simply choosing a better agent. The secret is that All Agents are not created equal and every buyer or seller should take the time to hire the BEST not just the biggest. I leave you with now infamous philosophy, which is simple, to provide more personal and professional service to guide my clients through each step of the buying or selling process.

It does not take magic to turn your "For Sale" sign into a "Sold" sign. it takes a full time Local Agent who specializes in Listing homes like yours.

Great story.  Just goes to show that success really is not that far away even on tougher deals.  I started at age 23 and did not get much respect then either.  But persistence and time pay off.

Roy I think it is the best way to lead to success. I see many agents come and then go as they had no support,

OMG Scott this is a fabulous first story. You were a baby - that learned to listen well. How fortunate you were to have your Mom show you the ropes and give you the support and encouragement (kick in the pants). Very cool.

Scott, So glad to hear that the Remax bully was booted off the property. This is such a great story and certainly one with lessons that you still carry and work with and by today.

Hi SCott - What a great story and what a great mentor you had. It's so good to have learned that lesson about listening right out of the gate - some agents never learn it.

Kathleen i got a couple of 'hate emails" for Remax bashing, it is nothing against that comopany, the man was from Remax and their name was Remax Professionals at the time. He gave it to me good. i hope he was proud that day.

Unlike you, I got into real estate as a reluctant investor. My agent was a dirt man and like a father to me. He found me a 5 acre lot which I held for 3 years.

I doubled my money and was hooked! Becoming an agent as just a formality!
