As a retired Police Officer, I have been told "I hate cops" many times over the years. I would usually just consider the source and move on. But yesterday, I encounterd a variation on the theme that I did not see coming.
I was out prospecting Expired listings. At one particular house, a woman answered the door. She was a bit stand off-ish at first but soon warmed up to me. While standing on her porch having a nice conversation, I handed her an "expired packet" that I use and began explaining it to her. Out of nowhere, her husband appeared and attempted to snatch the folder out of her hand, presumably to give it back to me and throw me off his porch.
She jerked away so he could not grab the packet and then said to him, "it's ok, honey. He's nice." The husband then said, "I hate Realtors!".
I asked why he felt that way and he replied, "because they never show up when they say they will, they never return phone calls, they don't do what they say they are going to do, and all they want is to get the listing and move on." My response was, "You have obviously been working with the wrong Realtor. Perhaps you should give me a try."
He muttered something under his breath and retreated back into the house. The wife and I had a pleasant conversation on the porch as she asked me questions and I provided her the answers. I did not get a listing appointment but we left the door wide open for her to contact me and to sit down and chat after reviewing the info I had given her if she and her husband thought that would be helpful.
Beyond being a somewhat amusing story, and for a moment transporting me back to a previous life, this encounter confirmed what we already knew. Many Realtors do not provide sufficient customer service and in the process, it not only damages their business, but it taints all the rest of us too.
My goal is to always meet my client's needs and to far exceed their expectations. I would hope that this is your goal too.
So, what are your thoughts on this issue?
