Definition of Serendipity: an aptitude for making desirable discoveries by accident
Like everyone in business my primary goal is to market and find more clients. A great way for me to do that is through speaking engagements and I have a number of informational topics related to the business space that I am in. I know some people that are so promotional that they want to make sure that they get business every time. I believe that will create a negative impression and appearance of being pushy.
I was asked to speak at local chamber last night. I would be one of two speakers. I was asked if that would be a problem because it was a problem for someone else. Not at all was my response. “But we would also like you to talk about the benefits of the regional chamber since you are an ambassador.” "Sure", was my response.
Last night the first speaker was the town supervisor and then I followed up with a presentation on the regional chamber for the county.
Well, here is what happened. Most of the questions were directed to my area of expertise. During dinner several business owners asked me to meet with them about helping their businesses manage change.
My serendipity was a number of unexpected prospects.
The take away here is--you never know. Focus on helping other people and remember Zig Ziglar's quote, "You will get everything you want if you help enough people get what they want."
