HOW TO KEEP VISITORS ON YOUR WEBPAGE WHEN LINKING TO ANOTHER SITE
After reading Tammy Emineth's great Blog Post where she encouraged bloggers to place links to other web content to increase search engine optimization, she recommended coding the link so your reader stays on your website, while opening a new window to reference the link you placed on your blog post.
How do you do that? Using the example link above, if you click on it, you'll notice that a new window opens up when you click on the link to her post. My webpage however is still sitting behind the new window that was opened. To accomplish that, you'll need to be in the html editor mode when inserting the html code that contains the webpage you are linking to. While typing your post, to put it into html mode on your ActiveRain blog, you click the button that has the two brackets in the toolbar next to the spell checker.
Once you're in html mode you would use the html code below to insert your link to another site. In the example below, the portion highlighted in red would be replaced with the website you want to link to, as well as the specific descriptive text used in the sentence you are writing to explain the link.
EXAMPLE HTML
BREAKING IT DOWN
As you look at the example above, you'll notice that the first red area is the website address to get to Tammy's specific blog post that I wanted to link to. Obviously you would want to replace that link with the specific link you want your visitors to visit.
The second red area is the words you want your visitors to read within the sentence of your blog post that talks about the link. These are the words your readers see as highlighted text within your blog post.
In the example html above, the text in black is the actual html coding that instructs people's computers to keep your page open when they click on the link. A new window then opens to the website you linked to, while your website stays open so that your visitor can easily go back to it.
Since the example text above is actually a picture, you'll need to type out the text yourself. Just make sure you replace the text in red with the appropriate link, and text description. Save your typed html code so that you can easily use the code again next time you want to insert a link into a blog post.
