This would be funny if it wasn’t so outrageous. Congressman Jim Moran, a Democrat from Virginia, thinks that Congress deserves a raise. "I think the American people should know that the members of Congress are underpaid," Representative Moran said.
"I understand that it's widely felt that they underperform, but the fact is that this is the board of directors for the largest economic entity in the world.", Moran added.
Geez, Jim, do you really think we might hold the opinion that you folks underperform? What would give you that idea? Perhaps that the American people’s approval rating for Congress is in the 12-15% range…could that be a clue?
What other group of Bad News Bears could have almost 90% of the country think you stink at your job, and think it’s time to ask for a raise? Congress is the only group that comes to mind for me…what say you?
Would you want your surgeon to have 9 out of 10 people he operates on think he is bad with a scalpel? How about your pilot at 39,000 feet? What about your stockbroker managing your money? Hell, would you continue to even go to your barber or hair stylist if they screwed up 9 out of 10 people who came to them. No, only in the alternate universe of Washington politics would you still even be employed.
To Moran’s defense, he is only paid $174,000 a year for his services. Of course, this doesn’t include all his fringe benefits and the paltry retirement from the government he receives.
In his justification for a raise, he said he was part of “the board of directors for the largest economic entity in the world.” Jimbo,I hate to break it to you, but any business that spent itself into a $15 trillion deficit would have fired their board of directors a long time ago.
The Congressman said he plans to introduce an amendment to a spending bill that would give legislators a per diem payment to cover housing costs. Instead of this, I am thinking we offer them Federal housing, complete with 3 meals a day, and visitation privileges once a week. I am thinking an orange jumpsuit clothing allowance might even be in order.
Here is a novel idea. If you think you deserve a raise…maybe you and your buddies could go back and repair the damage you have done to medical insurance. How about social security, the deficit, and a laundry list of other pressing issues…normally when someone asks for a raise, they cite the things they have accomplished as justification for more money. The fact that you WANT MORE MONEY doesn’t do it for me.
Luckily for the country, Moran is not running again…so it is one down, and how many more to go???
I think this quote pretty well sums up the situation in Washington…
Experience hath shewn, that even under the best forms of government those entrusted with power have, in time, and by slow operations, perverted it into tyranny. Thomas Jefferson
